Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work and registered as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing or currently in a Nurse Aid Program.
License/Certification Required
Special Condition for Continued Employment - Registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing within four months of employment.
Essential Job Functions
The Medical/ Nursing Assistant is to work with professional and supportive staff to provide safe, efficient and therapeutically effective nursing care for the patient. Other assignments include:

  • To enhance a safe and disease free/controlled work place.
  • Organize and maintain the Mary S. Shook Student Health Service facility in a clean and sanitary condition.
  • This position is responsible for checking in students in the appointment vital signs area or the COVID testing area.
  • Assist in duties of maintaining supplies in the inpatient care area; light cleaning; complying with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), Clinical Laboratory improvement Amendments, and exposure plan for bloodborne pathogens as identified by the Mary S. Shook Student Health and related duties.
  • Be able to learn or have knowledge of instrument cleaning, disinfection and sterilization.
  • Work an occasional weekend to provide support in laboratory duties and/or assist the clinician with the student check in process.
  • This is not limited to additional duties dependent on the needs of the clinic.


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Licensed as a certified nursing assistant, medical office assistant, medical assistant, licensed practical nurse, emergency medical technician through the State of North Carolina or similar experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Prefer demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work; graduation from high school and possession of a Nursing Assistant license, LPN, MOA, MA; with some housekeeping experience. Must also be able to document in our electronic medical record.

Monday - Friday, dayshift with occasional evening coverage and weekend coverage depending on the needs of the clinic. Hours are adjusted to meet the needs of the clinic.

Physical Demands of Position
Skillful use of the various equipment used in Health Services. This would include computer skills, electronic medical record documentation and vital signs machines. The variety of cleaning methods and maintaining a sanitary health service. The cleaning would be as needed. The moving of patients would be occasional. The appt/vital signs, testing area and weekend lab would be as needed.

Technical Knowledge: Working knowledge of appropriate patient care techniques and treatments. Knowledge of appropriate procedures and guidelines for infection control. Working knowledge of services and appropriate nursing practices.

Communication: Ability to explain procedures or tasks to be performed to patients and/or their families. Ability to communicate with patients and families in a manner they understand, such as verbally, in writing, by demonstration, etc. Ability to document subjective and objective data, action taken and plan of care.

Client/Customer Service:
Ability to work as a team player with multi-disciplinary healthcare staff. Ability to deliver services in an organized and methodical manner.
