Job Description: Protective Clothing and Equipment Technician

Salary is $45,000

Job Summary:

Perform maintenance, inspection, repairs and certification/recertification on all chemical protective masks and clothing, Self-Containing Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA) and OSHA Level A and B suits/ensembles used during live toxic agent training at the Chemical Defense Training Facility, located on Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

Work hours: 06:00am - 02:45pm, Mon-Fri

Essential Responsibilities:



  • Control, issue, decontaminate, sanitize, recertify, and/or process for destruction all chemical personal protective equipment (PPE) and other items which get removed from the toxic areas.
  • Maintain computer access to perform government and company training. Enter data on government furnished property (GFP) website.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance records and database, maintain documented accountability of all items taken in and removed from the toxic areas.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate a variety of leakage detection equipment to test and certify protective masks and clothing used during live chemical agent toxic training.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses and fill Grade-D breathable air cylinders.
  • Maintain documented accountability of all items taken in and removed from the toxic areas.
  • Successfully complete Defense Chemical Test Equipment Operator & Maintenance Training Course
  • Successfully complete Draeger PSS 7000 Maintenance Training Course
  • Serve as subject matter experts (SME) and provide technical advice and recommendations for SCBAs, M50, M40, M45, M2000, S12 and M65 chemical protective masks, chemical protective clothing, and OSHA Level A and B suits/ensembles.
  • Cross-train for other positions if needed. Substitute for TST ( Training Support Team)


Other duties as assigned by Management.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • High school diploma/equivalent.
  • Must be able to be medically cleared to wear M50 Joint Service General Purpose Field Protective Mask and other required protective clothing and work in a lethal toxic environment for up to 6 hours
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs


Protective Clothing & Equipment Duties:



  • Perform maintenance, inspection and certification on all chemical protective clothing and equipment at the U.S. Army Chemical School, Chemical Defense Training Facility.
  • Perform test, inspection and certification/recertification on all the following chemical protective clothing: boots, gloves, Lab gloves, and HAZMAT-Tingly boots.
  • Maintain stockage levels of all PPE needed for toxic training at the CDTF.
  • Operate chemical defense test equipment (DCTE), to certify that all protective masks, boots, gloves and TAP aprons are of proper integrity to wear inn a toxic environment.
  • Operate protective mask drink tube sanitization system.
  • Perform maintenance on chemical protective masks including removal and replacement of filters/canisters, cleaning, replacing valve disks, drink tube systems and head harness assembly.
  • Inspect/re-inspect all chemical protective suits for serviceability for use in toxic environment and to remove from use when the maximum number of uses has been met.
  • Maintain a database daily which tracks all PPE by lot number, serial number, size, wear-out/expiration date, initial certification date, recertification date, maintenance technician traceability, periodic maintenance recall date, JACKS Code information, and destruction/disposal date. Forecast PPE by type and quantity, which is set to expire per JACKS guidelines or normal wear-out date.
  • Perform Level 1-3 care and maintenance of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Operate, repair, and maintain, two (2) Sperian Biosystems Posi-Check 3EP consoles and four (4) DuPont Universal Pressure Test Kits.
  • Operate life support air compressor and SCBA filling station
  • Perform monthly inspections on SCBA and associated air cylinders
  • Operate Level "A" suit pressure tester
  • Inspect OSHA Level "A" and "B" suits/ensemble.
  • Perform fit testing and issue of M50 Joint Service General Purpose Field Protective Mask for emergency escape mask for all designated personnel
  • Launder and sanitization of masks, canteens, permeable and impermeable chemical protective clothing to include inner clothing, undergarments and shoes.
  • Responsible for set-up and inventory of the emergency decontamination line in event emergency evacuation of the toxic area training.
  • Cross-train for other positions if needed. Substitute for TST ( Training Support Team)
  • Manage and assist in the issuing, receiving, and maintaining records pertaining to protective clothing, equipment, respiratory protection apparatuses, chemical protective masks and protective clothing.


Certifications/Qualifications Requirements - All Training will be provided by Dawson.



  • Defensive Chemical Test Equipment (DCTE) Operator Certification (Pine Bluff)
  • Defensive Chemical Test Equipment (DCTE) Maintenance Certification (Pine Bluff)
  • Drager SCBA Maintenance Certification (Level II Certificate of Training for maintenance and operation of the Drager PSS 7000 Self Contained Breathing Apparatus).
