Overview:

We are seeking a Drafting Designer who will focus on developing and maintaining civil/site and mapping information for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) site. This position resides in the Drafting and Engineering Information Services Team in the Integrated Operations Support Division, Facilities and Operations Directorate at ORNL.

As part of our team, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining engineering drawings and maps for the ORNL site. This position will be responsible for developing and interpreting site mapping information used for excavation work planning and will also serve as the ORNL Excavation/Penetration Permit Coordinator. The Drafting Designer will use GPS equipment to gather precise field information combined with other data sources (e.g., as-built drawings, high-resolution aerial imagery, etc.) to maintain mapping information and develop civil engineering drawings and custom maps.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Gather field data using GPS/GNSS equipment and import data into existing maps and civil engineering drawings. Support ORNL's drone/sUAS data gathering initiatives.
  • Develop Civil Engineering drawings and custom maps in accordance with drafting standards.
  • Coordinate site Excavation and Penetration permits to ensure permits contain the appropriate engineering information and are reviewed by the appropriate stakeholders.
  • Serve as administrator of the Permit Express application used to process electronic permits.
  • Maintain ORNL's underground Atlas Sheet drawings which are ORNL Essential Records.
  • Perform miscellaneous civil/mapping drafting tasks, as needed.
  • Provide Computer Aided Drafting & Design (CADD) data to Geographic Information System (GIS) staff to ensure CADD and GIS data remain in sync.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A.S. or A.A.S. degree in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design or related engineering discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Drafting and Design with experience in Civil Drafting.
  • Proficiency in Computer-Aided Design Software including Bentley MicroStation.
  • Experience with GPS/GNSS survey equipment and processing software.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in engineering-related discipline.
  • Experience with GIS (Esri, MapInfo, Bentley civil applications, etc.).
  • Experience working with high resolution aerial imagery.
  • Experience using drone/sUAS technology to capture imagery used for mapping.
  • FAA Part 107 license.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
