The Painter/Carpenter Engineer is responsible for performing skilled painting, carpentry, and general maintenance duties throughout the hotel. This role ensures the upkeep and functionality of all public areas, guest rooms, and back-of-house spaces in accordance with brand standards and safety regulations. The position also supports preventative maintenance and emergency repairs, contributing to guest satisfaction and operational excellence.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Painting and Wallpaper Responsibilities:
Prepare surfaces and apply paint, varnish, stains, epoxy, or other finishes to walls, ceilings, doors, and furniture. Perform drywall repair, caulking, patching, sanding, and priming. Install, repair, and remove wallpaper and wall coverings as needed in guest rooms and public spaces. Ensure wallpaper patterns are properly aligned and seams are secure and visually appealing. Maintain tools and supplies (including adhesives, rollers, and trimming tools) in a clean and organized manner. Match paint colors for touch-ups and perform regular touch-up maintenance. Complete painting and wallpaper assignments in guest rooms and public areas as part of scheduled maintenance.
Carpentry Responsibilities:
Build, repair, and install furniture, cabinetry, doors, molding, trim, and wall structures. Replace or repair drywall, ceiling tiles, baseboards, and tile. Assemble fixtures, shelves, and custom pieces per work orders. Operate woodworking tools and machinery safely.
General Maintenance Duties:
Maintain all building-related systems and the building envelope to ensure guest, associate, and vendor safety. Ensure compliance with Engineering Assumptions/Culture, preventative maintenance programs, SOPs, MVV, and all applicable Building/Fire/Health codes. Assist with preventative maintenance and complete work orders (e.g., replacing ceiling tiles, light bulbs, patching vinyl, repairing or reapplying wallpaper). Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (e.g., "room care"). Support minor repairs of electrical systems such as AC controls, lighting, and televisions. Assist in routine and major repairs of equipment: kitchen appliances, laundry machines, boilers, pool systems, HVAC, plumbing systems, and general fixtures. Maintain and service pool including chemical adjustments and filter cleaning. Maintain exterior building and curb appeal (e.g., snow removal, painting, lawn care, gardening). Move furniture and fixtures as needed. Respond courteously to guest complaints or maintenance requests. Operate heavy machinery and work in extreme temperatures as necessary. Comply with attendance rules and be available to work regularly.
Collaboration and Documentation:
Work closely with the Engineering team on both scheduled and emergency repairs. Complete and close out work orders promptly. Maintain a safe and clean work area in compliance with OSHA and hotel policies. Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills:
High school diploma or equivalent required. Vocational training, military experience, certification and/or 2-3 years' experience in building trades, especially in HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing, and Carpentry. Experience in wallpaper installation or wall covering work preferred. Previous hotel or commercial property experience preferred. Effective verbal and written communication; must be able to follow directions and report progress. Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs., climb ladders, stand and walk for extended periods. Skilled in reading blueprints and interpreting work orders. Familiarity with hand and power tools, painting equipment, wallpaper tools, and carpentry tools. Strong attention to detail, cleanliness, and precision in finishing work. Flexible availability including weekends and holidays as required.
Work Environment:
Work performed both indoors and outdoors. Exposure to dust, solvents, paints, wallpaper adhesive, noise, and inclement weather. Interaction with hotel guests, staff, and outside vendors.
