About the College

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and Cornell University's second largest college. We work across disciplines to tackle the challenges of our time through world-renowned research, education, and outreach. The questions we probe and the answers we seek focus on three overlapping concerns: We believe that achieving next-generation scientific breakthroughs requires an understanding of the world's complex, interlocking systems. We believe that access to nutritious food and a healthy environment is a fundamental human right. We believe that ensuring a prosperous global future depends on the ability to support local people and communities everywhere. By working in and across multiple scientific areas, CALS can address challenges and opportunities of the greatest relevance, here in New York, across the nation, and around the world.

About the Department

The Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center (LIHREC) is a 68-acre facility dedicated to serve the research and extension needs of the horticulture industries of Long Island. The facility features agricultural fields and research plots, state-of-the-art greenhouses, a nursery and container production area, and a plant tissue culture facility in support of research projects ranging from grape and vegetable production to ornamentals and floriculture. is located close to the tip of Long Island, in the heart of Suffolk County. Unique growing conditions on Long Island provide exceptional opportunities for this region. The climate is ideal for farming - it is the only area in New York State with USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7. Strong underground aquifers provide plenty of fresh water. Cornell University established LIHREC over 100 years ago not only because of the importance of agriculture in the region, but also because the region is climatically different from upstate NY, where the Cornell Ithaca and Geneva campuses are situated. Suffolk County has a unique maritime environment, with an earlier and longer growing season than the rest of the state and often experiences unique pest and disease pressures including invasive species. In addition, Long Island's sandy soils and shallow aquifer limit crop and pest management options. With climate change expected to have a major impact on coastal regions, LIHREC is ideally located to address the effects of climate on crop production on Long Island. Staff at LIHREC work together to address transdisciplinary questions and translate discoveries into practical solutions that help growers and businesses thrive.
