Technical Responsibilities:

RTT Team Lead performs his/her job demonstrating technical ability, understanding of job expectations and compliance with organizational policies and procedures. The RTT Team Lead performs the following job responsibilities:

  • Provide radiation therapy services by contributing as an essential member of the radiation oncology treatment team through provision of total quality care of each patient.

  • Communicate effectively with patients, families and other members of the radiation oncology team.

  • Respond physically, intellectually and emotionally to emergency situations, provide first aid, CPR and other patient care until a physician or nurse arrives.

  • Capable of handling stressful situations, making informed decisions and giving emotional support to patients and their families.

  • Document accurately and legible treatment set-ups, doses and calculations.

  • Use good judgment in regard to situations in which treatment be held until consultation with the radiation oncologist.

  • Explain procedure to patient, means of communication during treatment and procedure to be followed if emergency arises during treatment.

  • Reinforce advice given to patients about skin care, mouth care, diets and general welfare.

  • Provide instructional direction and/or guidance to therapists under his/her supervision in correct procedure and practice for both routine and complex tumor localization and treatment.

  • Fulfill the essential functions of a registered RTT in the clinical setting of Radiation Oncology.

  • Evaluate and assess treatment delivery components by manually performing quality assurance and quality control checks, observing monitors and scales to note divergence from expected readings, detecting equipment malfunctions and taking appropriate action.

  • Evaluate and assess daily, the physiologic and psychological responsiveness of each patient delivery including providing effective patient education.

  • Maintain values congruent with the profession's code of ethics and scope of practice as well as adhering to national, institutional and / or departmental standards, policies and procedures regarding treatment delivery and patient care.

  • Spend at least 30 hours per month on the treatment machines for observing staff and keeping up to date on technical skills. Management Responsibilities The RTT Team Lead is responsible for the management of Radiation Therapy Technologists, program planning, patient treatment, student training, providing treatment and process updates to residents and attending physicians and assisting in research as needed.

Team Lead Responsibilities:
  • Establish and continue to update an onboarding program for new hires.

  • Evaluate competence of RTT's on each technology and procedure for which they are assigned to perform.

  • Document, review and update all RTT procedures.

  • Determine resources needed for new technologies and procedures.

  • Educate RTT's regarding all applicable Practice, State & Federal policies and ensure compliance.

  • Establish training programs for RTT's on new technologies and procedures.

  • Effectively recommend the hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion, discharge, assignment, evaluation, discipline and adjustment of grievances of subordinate employees. Perform regular performance evaluations.

  • Coordinate and implement work assignments of radiation therapists to ensure proper work coverage and practical experience.

  • Proactively advise and counsel supervised RTT's with issues and concerns. Recommend further intervention as needed.

  • Ensure performance of maintenance and repairs on equipment as needed.

  • Coordinate scheduling problems.

  • Prepare employee-leave activity for payroll and submit to meet required deadline.

  • Develop and assign RTT's for education programs.

  • Coordinate and schedule complex patient schedules.

  • Serve as a member of management team to identify and solve problems, develop and implement policies and procedures, reviews and acts upon issues facing Radiation Oncology and the institution as a whole.

  • Participate in capital equipment purchases and budget planning.

  • Schedule use of radiotherapy equipment for PMI's, physics and protocol research.

  • Coordinate and manage highly technical procedures such as (IMRT) Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy, (GynHDA) High Dose Rate Radiotherapy, (FSRT) Fractionated Stereotactic Radiotherapy, SBRT, View Ray, OSMS and Stereotactic Brain Therapy (SBR) that work closely with a broad range of other disciplines.

  • Ensure staff RTT compliance with CE requirements and certifications.

  • Schedule RTT's to attend all mandatory training sessions in Radiation Safety, Emergency Preparedness/Infection Control, CPR, mask training, Communications, Harassment Training, etc.

  • Maintain effective communication with housekeeping, central supply, facilities management, etc.

  • Perform a minimum of 4 Tracers annually to comply with survey readiness and continually keep staff up to date on information pertaining to quality care and survey readiness.

  • Assist RTT's in all HR related matters such as FMLA, Worker's Compensation, Benefits, etc.

  • Serve on or lead department meetings and committees to assist in QA, Policy development, communication, and education.

  • Participate in community events when possible that practice and/or the field of Radiation Oncology. Volunteer to help coordinate or speak at these events when needed.

  • Act as Radiation Safety Officer, if applicable.

  • Comply with all Federal and State laws and regulations pertaining to patient care, patient's rights, safety, billing, and collections. Adhere to all company and departmental policies and procedures, including IT policies and procedures and Disaster Recovery Plan.

As a lead technologist, one will also be required to assist the VP of Radiation and Radiology Services when needed. These requirements may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work overtime when given sufficient notice.

  • Attend meetings when needed

  • Participate in conference calls

  • Provide input on various tasks, performance measures, and procedures

  • Act as a liaison between supervisor and co-workers when needed

  • Complete special projects in a timely manner

  • Develop and display Leadership qualities

  • Promptly address mobile alert emails and texts (i.e. chiller problems, power issues, etc.)

Position Qualifications/Requirements

Education

  • Minimum - Graduate from an accredited School of Radiation Therapy Technology.

  • Preferred - BS Degree in Radiation Therapy Technology or other related field

  • Certified as a Registered Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Dual certification as a General Radiographer (ARRT) or CT Technologist is preferred

  • Must have current CPR/BLS certifications.

  • Fluency in the English language as well as excellent oral and written communication skills is essential. Additionally, ability to communicate in Spanish is also desirable.

Previous Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years active experience as a Radiation Therapist is required as well as two (2) year active experience as a Radiation Therapy Team Lead or Supervisor.

  • Alternatively, minimum ten (10) years active experience as a Radiation Therapist and demonstrated leadership abilities.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Certified as a Registered Radiation Therapy Technologist by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.

  • Dual certification as a General Radiographer (ARRT) or CT Technologist is preferred.

  • Must have current CPR/BLS certifications.

Standard Work Days/Hours: Tuesday - Saturday or Monday to Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM dependent upon current staffing. May require some additional weekend time to complete assignments or special projects.
