Job Title: Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Specialist
Department: Emergency Department & Psychiatry Services



General Summary

The Behavioral Health Crisis Intervention Specialist provides critical support to the Emergency and Psychiatry Departments in evaluating patients who present with behavioral health concerns, with or without the need for hospitalization. This role delivers rapid patient assessments, collaborates with medical providers to determine appropriate dispositions and treatment plans, and ensures safe treatment, discharge, and transition plans. The specialist also serves as a valuable resource to patients' families and the community.

While working in the Emergency Department or inpatient behavioral health settings, the specialist provides comprehensive patient care, including assessment, treatment planning, and counseling for individuals, groups, and families. The role is an integral part of the multidisciplinary team and participates in community relations efforts for the unit.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate behavioral conditions in Emergency Department patients requiring crisis intervention services.



  • Conduct behavioral assessments using standardized screening tools in accordance with Department of Psychiatry policies and procedures.



  • Communicate psychiatric crisis intake assessments and clinical findings to psychiatric medical providers, and develop disposition plans to be shared with Emergency Department medical providers.



  • After consultation with psychiatric medical providers, relay disposition plans and clinical details to ED medical providers and the charge nurse of the inpatient behavioral health unit.



  • Maintain updated training in assessing high-risk psychiatric patients and crisis intervention techniques.



  • Complete psychosocial evaluations on assigned patients in compliance with institutional and regulatory standards, demonstrating strong interviewing, diagnostic, and report writing skills.



  • Provide therapies consistent with patient diagnoses and needs, with appropriate supervision.



  • Complete progress notes and assessments per program procedures.



  • Assist in developing individualized treatment plans and ensuring patients are informed of their plans.



  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions in line with regulatory standards, applying sound knowledge of group therapy principles and techniques.



  • Ensure documentation reflects thorough assessment, planning, consultation, collaboration, and disposition for accurate coding and compliance purposes.



  • Enter documentation into EPIC using appropriate Social Work/Crisis Interventionist flow sheets.



  • Collaborate with the ED care team to enhance quality of care and ensure safe transitions.



  • Maintain knowledge of community resources for mental health and substance use treatment, and facilitate connections as needed.



  • Work collaboratively with physicians, patients, families, and other care providers to develop safe discharge or transition plans.



  • Assess patients identified as vulnerable based on Case Management/Social Work consults in EPIC.



  • Identify patients with special needs for protective services or court-appointed conservators, and make appropriate referrals.





Other Duties & Responsibilities


  • Collaborate with Psychiatric Department leadership and unit staff to develop strategic plans, program goals, and objectives.



  • Maintain professional growth and development through goal setting and continuing education, while sustaining clinical expertise.



  • Participate in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives, including identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing changes.



  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Abilities Required


  • Expertise in psychiatric crisis intervention assessment, treatment planning, and individual, family, and group counseling for complex psychiatric populations.



  • Familiarity with patient triage processes for emergent, urgent, and non-urgent cases preferred.



  • Strong communication and education skills for staff, patients, and families, with the ability to provide comprehensive written and verbal reports.



  • Proficiency in a computerized healthcare environment preferred.





Minimum Education & Experience


  • Licensure as an LICSW, LGSW, LPC, or LGPC in the District of Columbia.



  • Master's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Mental Health, Nursing, or a related field.



  • Minimum of two to three years of psychiatric social work or counseling experience, focusing on adult/geriatric crisis management and complex psychiatric populations.



  • Current CPR certification required.




Salary Range: Minimum 39.75/hour - Maximum 65.56/hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

In cases where the range is displayed as a $0 amount, salary discussions will occur during candidate screening calls, before any subsequent compensation discussion is held between the candidate and any hiring authority.
