POSITION SPECIFICS

The Curator (museum, archive, or gallery) determines the level of care and storage conditions for objects in a collection; designs and implements documentation, performs information retrieval, and manages storage systems to ensure safety and facilitate research use of collections; responds to requests to use the museum's research collections; catalogues new collections, writes grant proposals, and fund-raising papers.

  • Guide the development and growth of the museum's collections; oversee the installation and proper maintenance of collections
  • Generate temporary exhibitions in area of expertise
  • Responsible for the legal and ethical care of collections and objects; evaluate and monitor storage and display conditions; arrange appropriate treatment and maintenance when necessary
  • Provide support in maintaining exhibition schedule; submit budgets and other curatorial expenses to appropriate personnel
  • Research material and write scholarly manuscripts
  • Cultivate relationships with dealers, collectors, curators, and other museum personnel
  • Support the accomplishment and advancement of the museum's mission and strategic direction
  • Develop and foster relationships with academic units and other organizations across the University
  • Develop relevant programs and exhibitions related to collections
  • Create and publish various educational, outreach materials
  • Meet with and present to public, docent groups, and academic audiences about permanent collections and temporary exhibitions
  • Work closely with facilities and risk management personnel to develop and implement disaster/emergency response programs
  • May manage photographic rights and reproduction services
  • May provide management, inventory, and cataloging services for works of art both owned by and loaned to the museum
  • May teach a course in a defined area of specialization; advise student committees as needed

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree 1+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver's license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. Penn State does not sponsor or take over sponsorship of a staff employment Visa. Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S.

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $46,400.00 - $67,300.00.
