Job Overview
The Driver/Engineer position is responsible for driving the assigned NASA Fire Department (FD) Fire Apparatus and operating large capacity pumps in firefighting operations. The main duties and responsibilities of the position will center around the safe operation and upkeep of NASA FD Fire Apparatus. The Driver/Engineer must safely transport personnel assigned to the apparatus to emergency situations where life, property, or the environment is at risk. Duties may also include performing daily maintenance and equipment, fire prevention, emergency medical service, hazardous material response, search and rescue, and disaster assistance. The Driver/Engineer Fire Apparatus is open only to current White Sands Test Facility employees of the NASA Fire Department. The Driver/Engineer (Fire Apparatus) promotional process will consist of three required testing components:
- Written Exam
- Driving Assessment
- Scenario-based evaluation. To become eligible for promotion, candidates must achieve a minimum score of 70% on each individual portion of the process/testing components. Failure to attain the minimum passing score on any one portion will result in disqualification from the remainder of the promotional process.

Responsibilities
Essential Duties & Job Functions:
- Drive and operate the fire apparatus to include: maneuvering, connecting hose lines, operating pump panels, determining, calculating, and monitoring flow pressure; replacing nozzles/tips, performing hook-ups, pumping foam, etc.
- Check and maintain apparatus and emergency equipment. Assist mechanics in the repair of apparatus and equipment as and when needed. Provide routine cleaning of vehicles and equipment.
- Set up rescue equipment. Work with crews to practice rescue operations. Operate and train to operate other apparatus used by the department. Assist in the training and orientation of others.
- Provide Basic Life Support (or Advanced Life Support if a Paramedic) and safe, efficient transportation of ill or injured subjects to local receiving hospitals by ambulance.
- Respond to alarm and emergency situations, which include, but are not limited to:

- Structure fires, hazardous materials, technical rescue, and all other emergency situations that are pertinent to the position.
- Serve as a structural firefighter and HAZMAT responder as required.

- Participate in Fire and Emergency Services activities including fire suppression, EMS, rescue, public assistance, fire investigation, fire prevention, pre-fire planning, Fire Company training, public education, clinical training, perform clean-up of the fire scene and routine maintenance of apparatus, equipment and facilities.
- Supports emergency management functions as needed.
- Test or troubleshoot problems with facility, equipment, apparatus, and fire protection systems.
- Prepare and maintain reports and records of activities, incidents, inspections or other information.
- Perform other duties as required.
Accountable For:
- Working knowledge of the apparatus, fire skills, and operations.
- Timely and cost-effective performance of duties.
- Capable of multi-tasking and working without close supervision.
- Performing various administrative duties as required.
- Maintaining station and living quarters.
- Dressing appropriately to the position. Not posing a safety risk or hazard to employees or others and adhering to all NASA and Company Policies.
- Knowledge of the operation of water supply lines, hoses, and nozzles is required.
- Must be able to wear an SCBA and successfully pass FF Physical Exam.
- Must be able to pass the NASA FD Physical Ability Test during at the entrance level and annual as defined by NFPA.
- Excellent oral and communication skills in English are required.
- Good computer skills are required.
Job Requirements
Mandatory:
- Current NASA Firefighter for no less than two (2) years and in possession of the current requirements of a NASA/WSTF Firefighter.
- Must be recognized as a current Fire Apparatus Alternate Driver Operator for the NFD or possess equivalent certification(s).
- Current or ability to obtain IFSAC Driver/Operator within 18 months of promotion.
- Must be capable of performing duties consistent with this classification as assigned by NFD Management.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Possess and maintain a valid Class E NM State driver's license.
- Must be able to successfully pass a written and practical examination specific to the position of Driver/Engineer for fire apparatus.
- Must submit to company required drug screen tests (if applicable).
Physical Requirements:
- Must successfully complete and pass annual physical ability test for Firefighters.
- Requirement to maintain physical fitness (gym time is provided).
- Strenuous physical exertion may occur when conducting firefighting operations and hazardous operations associated with the position.
- Non-hazardous requirements include: sitting, walking, standing, use of stairs, uneven terrain, and accessing remote areas.
Work Environment:
- Position is located on a hazardous test facility operated by NASA.
- Prepare to work in all type of environments associated with firefighting.
- Work schedule is a 48/96 schedule so candidate must prepare to maintain the fire station and assigned dormitory.
