Overall Responsibilities:

The Rehabilitation Associate will provide Center Based independent living skills instruction to adults who are blind or visually impaired so that they may function at a level which will result in an independent lifestyle. The Rehabilitation Associate is responsible for providing instruction on activities of daily living and functions as part of a multidisciplinary team providing various aspects of training.

This position is part-time, 20 hours per week, working on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Education and Experience:

Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent and 3 years of experience working with people who are blind or visually impaired.

  • While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent may be exposed to outdoor changing weather conditions and various indoor environmental conditions.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide vision rehabilitation instruction in a variety of areas including personal and home management, communication skills, technology, keyboarding, and manual skills.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of individualized plans with the client that focus on the short- and long-term needs of the client.
  • Document the assessment of the client's skills, instruction provided, and progress toward goals in accordance with Program guidelines.
  • As directed, instruct individuals and small groups in the center in various daily living skills including, but not limited to, the use of magnification, glare shields, lighting, time telling, food preparation, money management, medication and diabetes management, household tasks, cleaning, clothing care and identification, personal grooming, sewing, eating techniques, leisure activities, time management, labeling, telephone use, home safety techniques and repairs, and the use of various hand tools.
  • Provide instruction in personal communication and technology, as appropriate for the client's needs, including handwriting, note taking, Braille, telephone use, reading using low vision adaptive devices, using audio and smart devices to accomplish tasks, and accessing low vision apps.
  • Emphasizes the effective use of any residual vision, tactile, and other sensory modalities, and reinforce learning associated with other areas of instruction.
  • Accurately maintain client files and the timely documentation for reporting and billing as directed by the Rehabilitation Team Supervisor.
  • Maintain knowledge of and/or how to access community resources to make appropriate referrals as needed.
  • Stay current in the field through conferences and workshops and provide training to other professionals as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
