About the Job

The Department of History at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, invites applications for the Amos S. Deinard Memorial Chair in Early Modern/Modern Jewish History. The appointment will be a full-time, 9-month appointment at the rank of either Associate Professor with tenure or Professor with tenure. The appointment will begin August 31, 2026. Rank and salary will depend upon qualifications and experience and be consistent with College and University policy.

The person appointed to this position must be an historian of the early modern and/or modern Jewish experience with broad scholarly interests addressing Jewish communities and their interactions with non-Jewish neighbors in comparative, global and diasporic perspectives. The holder of the chair will be expected to contribute significantly to the Department of History's strengths in comparative and global history, particularly beyond Europe and the United States, and complement faculty interests in one or more of the following areas: migration and diasporas; comparative empires and borderlands; conceptions and experiences of race, indigeneity, gender, and religion; legal history; histories of capitalism. The ideal candidate would be a scholar and teacher who situates the history of Jews and Judaism during the early modern period within the broader contexts of histories of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Ottoman Empire, Africa, the Atlantic World (including Latin America and the Caribbean), and/or the Indian Ocean.

The successful candidate will be tenured in the Department of History and will also be a full member of the Jewish Studies faculty. The holder of the chair will participate in and provide intellectual leadership for the research and curricular mission of the Center for Jewish Studies. In addition, the holder of the chair will also have the opportunity to contribute to other interdisciplinary and cross-regional projects in the College of Liberal Arts and the University of Minnesota, such as the Center for Premodern Studies, the Immigration History Research Center and the Religious Studies Program.

Teaching responsibilities consist of four courses over two semesters, including service courses (e.g., the World History survey or History Senior Paper), and graduate and undergraduate courses in areas of specialization.

The Department of History has a strong commitment to diversity. We encourage scholars from underrepresented groups to apply. We welcome experience working with diverse students, in multicultural environments, and interest in developing curricula and public outreach to diverse populations.
