The Pharmacy Technician Float is responsible for traveling to and providing pharmacy staff coverage/support to clinics within assigned region, within short notice and for extended periods of time that may range from weeks to months. May also be requested to travel to other clinics across the American Oncology Network, the technician must maintain a flexible schedule to meet the travel needs of this role.

The Pharmacy Technician will execute complex technical tasks in preparing both hazardous and nonhazardous parenteral medications under licensed healthcare professional supervision, adhering to state regulations. Proficiency in sterile drug preparation, understanding biological safety cabinets, and knowledge of antineoplastic/cytotoxic agents with necessary precautions are crucial. Responsible for ordering and managing inventory of medications and clinical supplies, serving as a liaison between Physicians, Nursing, Pharmacy Management, and Procurement for special order medications. May be requested to serve as a preceptor for training of new pharmacy technicians, collaborating with AON's regional pharmacy training partners to ensure training meeting objectives are being met.

Due to the travel requirements of this position, candidates must reside near a major airport in a city with an AON presence.

Key Performance Areas

KPA 1 - Medication Preparations and Mixing Room Maintenance

  • Review medication orders to assure accuracy, to ascertain the needed ingredients, and to evaluate their suitability.

  • Perform mathematical calculations to determine appropriate drug measurements for admixture of ordered medications.

  • Admixes drugs as ordered by the physician in an accurate and timely manner.

  • Responsible for proper donning and compounding hazardous and non-hazardous drugs aseptically.

  • Understand the proper use and limitations of any selected PPE to ensure that it functions properly.

  • Use care in donning and removing all items to prevent damage to PPE and to reduce the spread of contamination.

  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned by manager.

KPA 2 - Maintain Policy, Applicable Record Keeping and Procedures

  • Maintain and ensure the confidentiality of all patient and employee information at all times.

  • Maintain necessary tracking and usage of ambulatory pumps.

  • Maintain necessary records pertaining to compassionate and non-billable drugs.

  • Responsible for keeping necessary records such as biological safety cabinet cleaning, mixing room cleaning, refrigerated and ambient drug temperatures, controlled substances, and eye wash stations.

  • Assist in training of nursing or pharmacy staff using Pharmacy Training Checklist.

KPA 3 - Pharmacy Equipment & Waste Management

  • Ensures BSC certification and proper function prior to use, communicating any issues with clinic management and pharmacy leadership.

  • Properly handle and dispose of hazardous drugs and waste materials following stated and federal regulation, including but not limited to OSHA, NIOSH, State and Federal Departments of Environmental protection

  • Maintains Hazardous waste manifests, if applicable

KPA 4 - Drug Inventory MWanagement, Dispensing, and Supply Ordering

  • Responsible for maintaining adequate stock of drugs and minimize waste.

  • Accurately dispense patient orders using an automated medication dispensing system.

  • Perform reconciliation of drug inventory to ensure accurate stock.

  • Responsible for reporting drug loss, communicating clinic charge and initiating drug replacement/reimbursement.

  • Responsible for cross collaborating with financial counselors for the tracking and ordering of indigent patient drugs (i.e. compassionate and non-billable drugs)

  • Responsible for reviewing orders for upcoming treatments to identify drug needs.

  • Responsible for ordering, stocking, and dispensing medical supplies as needed.

KPA 5 - Float and Travel Responsibilities

  • Provide pharmacy staff coverage/support to assigned clinics within the region on short notice for extended periods.

  • Travel to other clinics across the American Oncology Network as requested.

  • Maintain a flexible schedule to meet the travel demands of the role.

  • Ensure seamless transition and support during temporary assignments at different clinics.

  • Collaborate with clinic teams to optimize pharmacy operations during travel assignments.

Position Qualifications/Requirements

Education

  • High school Diploma, or equivalent required; College degree preferred.

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited pharmacy technician training program, or equivalent experience preferred.

Previous Experience

  • At least 12 months' recent experience as a pharmacy technician in a clinical setting required.

  • Experience in the preparation of sterile drug preparation, preferably hazardous medications strongly preferred.

  • Medical terminology and attention to detail is desirable.

  • Prior travel experience preferred.

Certifications/Licenses

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) or State Registration as Pharmacy Technician required; Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) preferred.

  • Certified Sterile Compounded Pharmacy Technician (CSPT) preferred.

  • Computer Skills:

    • Must have a demonstrated or documented proficiency in MS Office Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook required.

    • This role requires a robust knowledge of structured data tools, such as excel, google sheets as well as functions and pivot tables.

    • Technical experience in using project management tools such as Smartsheet, highly preferred.

    • Supply management ordering system experience preferred.
