Overview:

We're hiring an experienced, motivated, and highly organized UX/UI Web Services Task Lead to join our team! In this leadership role, you'll guide a talented group of designers and researchers, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, user-centered solutions aligned with lab priorities. You'll collaborate with UX leads, organizational leaders, developers, and stakeholders to prioritize, coordinate, and oversee UX efforts that deliver intuitive, accessible, and impactful user experiences.

This position resides in the User Experience group of the Application Development Division in the Information Technology Services Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Team Leadership & Planning

  • Oversee new work intake, manage the backlog, and coordinate project schedules to streamline workflows and ensure strategic prioritization.
  • Facilitate weekly planning sessions and WIP reviews to ensure progress, alignment, and quality.
  • Allocate tasks to designers and researchers, balancing workloads and optimizing resource utilization.

Collaboration & Coordination

  • Partner with cross-functional leadership to align on priorities, shared goals, process, and strategic initiatives.
  • Report on project status, progress, and challenges to ensure transparency, accountability, and alignment with goals.

Quality & Consistency

  • Ensure the team's output aligns with lab priorities while maintaining exceptional quality and consistency.
  • Champion user-centered design and prioritize accessibility throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Establish and enforce standards for usability, accessibility, and design system integration to maintain high-quality outcomes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in design, human-computer interaction, psychology, or a related field of study and a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of aligned professional experience is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent education and experience may be considered.
    • Masters and PhD degree holders in the same fields of study are also encouraged to apply:
      • Masters' holders should have a minimum of four (4) to six (6) years of relevant and aligned experience.
      • PhD holders should have up to three (3) years of relevant and aligned experience.
  • Proven experience leading design/UX teams, coordinating workstreams, and managing priorities.
  • Portfolio showcasing leadership in design, team collaboration, and impactful project outcomes.
  • Expertise in Figma and user-centered design methodologies.
  • Strong foundation in design principles, interaction design, responsive design, typography, and accessibility.
  • Skilled in designing responsive, web-based interfaces and collaborating with developers on implementation.
  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders and foster consensus.
  • Experience working in agile development environments is a plus.

For employment at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), a Real ID compliant form of identification will be required. Additionally, ORNL is subject to Department of Energy (DOE) access restrictions. To obtain this credential, new employees must successfully complete and pass a Federal Tier 1 background check investigation. If you have not resided in the U.S. for three consecutive years, you are not eligible for the PIV credential and instead will need to obtain a favorable Local Site Specific Only (LSSO) risk determination to maintain employment.
