Job Summary

#CA-DS

Investigates highly complex claims to maximize hospital reimbursement for commercial, third party administered claim and Medicare risk payers. Provide detailed and accurate claim follow-up; appeal writing resolving claim denials and evaluation the collectability of claims. Manages insurance reimbursement from third-party billings and government insurance programs. Keeps abreast of the full array of payer contracts and billing / collections requirements.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent or equivalent work experience or training
  • Experience with Commercial insurance and Medicare risk claim follow-up, appeal writing and complex cases for hospital claims.
  • Experience using payer portals.
  • Independent decision-making skills to determine appropriate course of action when following up or billing accounts.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and handle heavy workload, pressures of deadlines and organizational skills to meet production standards and flexibility to cover or back-up team members as needed.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills using English and a demonstrated ability to tactfully, clearly and concisely convey complex information; utilize effective listening and questioning techniques.
  • Familiarity with Medi-Cal, Medicare, commercial and other third-party payor program requirements, billing codes, diagnosis codes and medical terminology.
  • Ability to understand contract language to properly identify payor reimbursement category to ensure accounts are at expected reimbursement.
  • Ability to understand, utilize and apply contract/operational manual verbiage and terms.
  • Excellent mathematical skills to audit accounts and calculate expected reimbursement/underpayments based on contract terms.
  • Knowledge of third-party payor requirements and procedures to bill and follow-up accounts.
  • Ability to interpret payments, correspondence and denials from insurance companies, agencies and other departments.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated skill with various spreadsheet and software applications including MICROSOFT EXCEL and WORD, Clearinghouse, Contract Management and Patient Accounting Systems.
  • Ability to use computer technology effectively to perform billing functions as well as to navigate through the World Wide Web to obtain eligibility, benefits, claim status and upload requested data.
  • Must be able to sit at a computer workstation looking at the monitor and using the keyboard and mouse for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to read and interpret information sufficient to understand memos, manuals and bulletins regarding complex billing and follow-up procedures.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to accommodate changes in policies, procedures and management.
  • Basic bookkeeping skills to effectively adjust accounts.
  • Ability to establish a good rapport and professional working relationship with all departmental personnel, management and outside parties, readily assist co-workers and maintain appropriate interdepartmental communications.
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
