Job Summary

Coordinates the transplant department and provides comprehensive nursing care to patients and families during all phases of the transplant program.

Essential Functions

  • Performs duties and responsibilities of a nurse clinician as required.

  • Assesses health status by interviewing patient regarding current status and medical history, assisting inphysical exam and psychosocial assessment. Reviews and reports the results of the health statusassessment and physical examination, pertinent laboratory data, radio graphic data and psychosocialassessment of assigned patients to the transplant physician.

  • Coordinates and manages assessment and care for donor referrals from the National Marrow Donor Program. Facilitates or schedules consultations for all referrals as required, pre-testing, diagnostic tests or procedures and future appointments required for admission to the program and throughout the transplant process.

  • Oversees management of symptoms/toxicities/health abnormalities related to the intense high dosetherapy, stem cell rescue and rehabilitation following rescue in collaboration with transplant physician.

  • Provides psychosocial support to patients and families throughout therapy and rehabilitation, and asnecessary, facilitates communication among patient/family, physician and interdisciplinary team throughfacilitation of regular case conferences.

  • Provides expert care for the transplant patient at all phases of the process consistent with establishedstandards and utilization of the nursing process.

  • Maintains written and/or computer documentation of all patient care and treatments provided andpaperwork required for reimbursement purposes in accordance with organizational standards.

  • Assists with the reporting of data to company Transplant Network, International and Autologous Bloodand Marrow Transplant Registries, the NDMP and other appropriate bodies. Incorporates companyTransplant Network recommendations into clinical practice.

  • Develops and maintains quality assurance and outcome monitoring program. Participates in thedevelopment and implementation of standards for transplant patients in conjunction with other healthcare professionals.

  • Participates in clinical studies relative to chemotherapy and care of the transplant patient. Interpretsand communicates research and published data to nursing staff and other health care professionalsrelative to transplant patients.

  • Functions as a change agent to proactively improve nursing care practices relative to the transplantteam. Serves as a consultant/liaison in transplantation to inpatient and outpatient nurses and other healthcare professionals (i.e. case managers, research nurses, social workers, home health agencies andother facilities). Coordinates care of the patients as needed with the above-mentioned entities.Coordinates and manages assessment and care for donor referrals from the National Marrow DonorProgram. Maintains and updates all surveys, communication tools to assist with coordination.Provides patient, family, community, and professional education to those interested in the process oftransplantation. Assists with marketing of transplant program to other health care professionals,payors, and community. Assists with marketing events and functions of the transplant program as requested.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

  • This is a non-management job that will report to a supervisor, manager, director or executive.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Bachelor's degree in Nursing

  • Experience - Two (2) years oncology and chemotherapy administration experience

  • OCN ONCOLOGY CERT NURSE - RN06 Preferred

  • BMTCN Blood and Marrow Transplant Certified Nurse-Preferred
