WUNC Radio provides quality news, information and entertainment programming to a broad listening audience that includes North Carolina, the United States and the world.
WUNC serves North Carolinians from Greensboro to the Outer Banks through a network of ten stations. |
Position Summary |
The Technology Support Technician/Advanced position reports directly to the IT Director and provides technical expertise and support in the areas of broadcasting, IT, and project management at
WUNC Radio. This is an essential IT role as the incumbent ensures the critical IT components required for broadcast transmissions, computing and networking systems and the overall IT security protocols are monitored and well maintained to prevent disruptions in the station's day-to-day operations.
This position serves as the first point of contact for IT support with responsibilities ranging from installation, maintenance, and diagnostics of computer components, hardware, software and networking to assisting Engineering with broadcast systems integrations which update/maintain equipment to prevent delays or a loss of programming due to technical difficulties. Technical support may be provided on-site and/or remotely as requests for support are submitted via help tickets or directly in critical situations or by supervisor. The position is proactive in expanding their knowledge and educating staff on technical advances by providing feedback and assistance on software or hardware issues and preventive maintenance. Although the incumbent works independently, this position is part of an IT team that maintains WUNC's IT infrastructure and network systems in multiple locations which consist of Chapel Hill (primary), Durham, Raleigh, Fayetteville, Greensboro and the Outer Banks. This position solidifies the ability to ensure optimal broadcasting and technical support as it is vital to sustain the broadcasting and administrative operations of a listener supported station.
This position is part of the team serving as backup to the Chief Operator/Engineer. This may involve remote access to transmitter site systems, work on the transmitter computers that help manage all hardware at each site. This position will also help manage the remote satellite receivers that carries our signal.
The work schedule may include weekends, occasional holidays and varied hours to support technical operations with travel between studio and equipment locations. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Graduation from high school and one year in the field of technology related to the position's role.
- Computer coursework may be substituted year-for- year for the required experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional six months experience
- Advanced level requires an additional one year of experience. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to details
* Ability to explain technical issues to technical and non technical staff
* Driver's license
* Network security and firewall management
* Thorough understanding of Local Area Network (
LAN), Wide Area Network (
WAN), Wireless Local Area Network (
WLAN), and
TCP/IP technologies
* Diagnose, troubleshoot, and implement solutions for hardware and software
* In-depth knowledge of MS, Mac, and Linux operating systems
* Proficient with Google Suite, Microsoft systems and/or other project management software
* Work on scheduled projects outside of regular office hours as necessary and respond to afterhours emergencies
* Proficient verbal and written communication skills
* Proficient interpersonal and customer service skills |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
* Advanced degree beyond high school in a related IT field and at least 2-3 years experience
* Experience monitoring satellite feed.
* Experience with digital and radio broadcast technologies. |
