Essential Job Duties |
NC State University is seeking a skilled and experienced
Senior Line Technician to join our
Utilities and Engineering Services team. This position serves as the
team lead in the field, responsible for the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage electrical distribution systems across all campus locations. This includes emergency generators, underground cable, street and area lighting, and related power system infrastructure.
The Senior Line Technician plays a critical role in
service restoration, preventative maintenance, infrastructure installation, and safety oversight. This position requires strong technical expertise, leadership, and quick response capabilities to ensure uninterrupted power delivery and system reliability. Key responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Lead field teams in constructing, repairing, and maintaining high-voltage electrical systems and infrastructure
Operate, inspect, and maintain underground and overhead power distribution systems, including vaults, manholes, switches, transformers, and breakers- Perform troubleshooting and repairs using diagnostic tools (voltmeters, ohmmeters, power meters, etc.)
Schedule and complete preventive and predictive maintenance tasks across all university campuses- Interpret schematics, maps, and technical documents for complex electrical systems
- Install and repair street and area lighting systems across multiple campus zones
- Ensure worksite safety, identify hazards, and enforce proper PPE and equipment use
- Oversee and support lower-level technicians, especially in cable splicing and infrastructure projects
- Operate heavy equipment such as bucket trucks, line trucks, forklifts, and cable pulling tools
Track maintenance needs and prioritize repairs using CMMS and other tracking software

Other Responsibilities |
- Serve as backup to the supervisor when needed, providing leadership, coordinating daily operations, and ensuring continuity of service during their absence

Qualifications
Minimum Experience/Education |
High school diploma or equivalency and six months of electrical experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Maintains required certification(s). |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
- Must be able to lift up to 90 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience in underground and overhead Power Distribution Systems in a commercial or university setting.
