Job Summary

#CA-DS

Under minimal direction, the General Accountant 4 performs highly complex professional accounting and financial duties for the Health System, applying advanced accounting concepts and organizational objectives to independently resolve diverse, non-standard issues. This role plans, develops, and coordinates complex financial analyses in a highly independent manner, with comprehensive knowledge of general ledger and budgetary systems, accounting principles, healthcare financial practices, and regulatory compliance requirements (UC, state, federal, GASB).

The position is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of complex accounting systems and processes; preparing, interpreting, and presenting complex financial statements, reconciliations, variance analyses, statistical reports, and other ad-hoc reports to audiences ranging from departmental staff to senior management. Serves as a subject matter expert and liaison to various departments on system implementations, process design and redesign, financial system training, and advanced reporting initiatives. Provides guidance and training to staff, advises management on strategic financial matters, and prepares recommendations and financial models to improve Medical Center accounting recording and reporting. Additional responsibilities include monthly close activities, internal and external audit support, cross-training with the School of Medicine Accountants, School of Medicine financial reporting, and a variety of ongoing and special financial projects.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of experience, education or training
  • Several years of accounting experience required
  • Experience using a General Ledger system.
  • Advanced knowledge in accounting and financial management principles, theory and practice including knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles in Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) environment.
  • Excellent Excel skills, including formatting, Vlookups, IFs, Sumifs, and Pivot Tables.
  • Advanced professional level of analytical, statistical and mathematical skills to conduct complex financial analyses.
  • Advanced skill with and Experience in leading assigned projects, seeing project through from beginning to end with little or no direction to a successful conclusion.
  • Experience in summarizing, analyzing and accurately reporting on large volumes of data using multiple systems in a timely manner.
  • Proven teamwork skills with the ability to successfully be a member of a multi-functional team and to contribute to moderately complex projects.
  • Ability to apply more advanced accounting concepts in the completion of assignments. - Ability to gather, organize and perform. Ability to: Share information with and receive information from customers and colleagues using effective, clear, persuasive and audience-appropriate verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license or CPA candidate desired.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accountancy preferred
  • 5+ years accounting experience highly preferred

Department Overview

The Finance and Accounting Services Department consists of the General Accounting, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Capital Asset Finance and Finance Business Systems departments. This role will work in the General Accounting department. The General Accounting department ensures accurate financial management of hospital and clinical operations, supports compliance with healthcare regulations, and provides financial insight for strategic planning. It is critical in managing both operational and patient-related financial transactions. The department has accounting responsibility over the patient revenue cycle, non-patient revenue, short term and long term debt, investments, joint ventures, intercompany accounting, accounts receivables, payables, external and internal audits, and general ledger and financial reporting to Executive management.
