A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Assistant Director of Husbandry and Operations, the primary responsibilities of this role will be to provide oversight of husbandry and cage wash personnel, daily facility activities, and respond to issues that arise within the facilities.
This position will serve as a departmental liaison for research faculty and vendor relationships in the current expanding research program.
What you will do
- General
- Oversee daily operations of animal facility (Colket Translational Research Building) and husbandry staff (changing cages, writing health reports, sanitizing facilities).
- Oversee daily cage wash operations of cage wash staff.
- Train, assign, schedule, monitor, and evaluate all tasks for husbandry and cage wash staff personnel, according to all applicable SOPs and policies.
- Oversee husbandry of various rodent colonies (immunocompromised, biohazard, barrier, quarantine, etc.).
- Oversee cage wash operations and maintenance (schedules, equipment maintenance, quality control procedures).
- Oversee collection of the animal census, animal transfers between vivaria, receipt of animals and equipment into facility.
- Understand and ensure personnel follow all applicable SOPs and regulations.
- Work within Department of Veterinary Resources [DVR] management to address investigator concerns.
- Ensure animal environment is compliant with the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and all other federal, state, and local regulations and policies.
- In collaboration with the Associate Director of Research Operations, implement decisions regarding space allocation or reallocation.
- Oversee all equipment maintenance programs.
- Space Allocation and Management
- Provide recommendations for animal and laboratory space allocation and planning.
- Implement leadership decisions regarding space allocation or reallocation.
- Education/Mentoring
- Advise investigators and program staff regarding procedural issues.
- Interpret relevant policies and procedures for incoming staff and investigators.
- Provide training and development of prescribed policies, SOPs, etc. to assigned staff.
- Serve as a resource to investigators in the preparation and conduct of their approved protocols.
- General Administrative
- Implement policies and procedures to ensure accreditation and compliance with federal laws.
- Serve as a liaison for vendor relationships, and other groups with CHOP (Office of Research Safety, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, Facilities, etc.).
- Oversee equipment maintenance programs.
- Support quality assurance and compliance program as needed.
- Order and receive facility supplies and monitor inventory (food, bedding, PPE, cleaning supplies, etc.).
- Maintain records in accordance with relevant agency guidelines to include the state of Pennsylvania, Public Health Service, the USDA, and AAALAC.
- Assist with conduct of and preparation for USDA inspections and AAALAC accreditation site visits.
- Foster and maintain a customer service focus, utilizing professionalism and courteousness in responding to requests and/or concerns, and assisting research personnel.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education Qualifications
- High School Diploma / GED Required
- Bachelor's Degree Preferred
Experience Qualifications
- At least five (5) years of laboratory animal experience Required
- At least one (1) year of leadership, management or supervisory experience Required
- At least three (3) years of experience in AAALAC-accredited laboratory animal facility Preferred
- At least three (3) years of leadership, management or supervisory experience Preferred
- Previous experience with regulatory processes and associated audits Preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate a company vehicle and/or be insured on a CHOP policy.
- Advanced knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements related to animal care/use in research

Licenses and Certifications
- Driver's License - Department of Motor Vehicles - within 12 months - Required
- Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) - - Preferred
- Certified Manager of Animal Resources (CMAR) - American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) - - Preferred

SALARY RANGE:
$74,250.00 - $94,660.00 Annually
Salary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly. ------------------- This job is eligible for an incentive program.
