Special Note |
This is a full-time, overtime exempt position on the Olympia campus of The Evergreen State College. This position is an "at-will" appointment, exempt from Washington State Civil Service rules and the Fair Labor Standards Act overtime requirements. |
Position Purpose |
This position is responsible for developing, managing, and assessing comprehensive, integrated marketing and strategic communications campaigns for the college. In support of recruitment, marketing, fundraising, branding, awareness, and community outreach activities, the incumbent oversees the creation and distribution of content across various channels to promote the college, engage prospective students, and maintain brand awareness. The position leverages digital marketing tools and storytelling techniques to effectively communicate the college's value proposition. |
Nature and Scope |
Under the general direction of the Associate Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing, and Communications, this position recruits, mentors, supervises, and reviews the performance of one internal communications liaison and the team's administrative support position. By effectively leading the internal communications liaison and guiding external content strategy, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring coordinated messaging across the college's various content channels (e.g., web, intranet, Inside Evergreen, social media). The position oversees the marketing budget, maintains relationships with several vendors supporting the work of the college, and advises campus partners on budget decisions related to their marketing and advertising projects.
In collaboration with the Director of Creative and Web Services, this position works with other senior leadership members, ensuring an integrated approach to marketing and communications initiatives that elevate the reputation of the college and support the college's strategic goals. As the college's thought leader for strategic marketing, the incumbent supports all members of the marketing and communications team to apply marketing skills and knowledge throughout their work, improving our ability to deliver high-quality content and campaigns for the college. |
Essential Functions |
- Strategic planning: In collaboration with the Associate Vice President for Enrollment, Marketing, and Communications, create and oversee a holistic marketing strategy aligned with the college's goals, including target audience segmentation, messaging development, and channel allocation.
- Content development: Lead the creation of engaging and informative content across multiple platforms like websites, social media, publications, and email marketing, ensuring consistency with brand voice.
- Editorial calendar management: Plan and schedule content releases across various channels to maintain a steady flow of relevant information.
- Digital marketing leadership: Utilize digital marketing tools like search engine optimization, pay per click, social media analytics, and content management systems to optimize online visibility and engagement.
- Campaign management: Develop and execute targeted marketing campaigns for student recruitment, alumni engagement, fundraising, and other institutional priorities.
- Data analysis and reporting: Track key performance indicators to measure marketing effectiveness and make data-driven decisions to optimize campaigns.
- Media relations: Respond to media inquiries, monitor and analyze media coverage, and utilizing public relations and earned media tools to produce analysis reports on pitches, story placements, and media campaigns.
- Crisis communications: Develop a crisis communications protocol based on best practices and federal guidelines and respond to crisis and campus emergencies.
Media Relations
- As the college's Public Information Officer, direct, conduct, and support the media relations efforts of the college.
- Establish and maintain positive working relationships with the media.
- Represent the college to the media and public on a range of institution-wide issues, including issues with high-risk and high-opportunity potential.
- Advise and support college leadership and others to respond to media inquiries, making recommendations on responses and preparing leaders for media engagement.
Strategic Marketing
- Maintain a sophisticated 360-degree awareness of campus initiatives, local media positioning, state and federal higher-education issues, and metrics around student success.
- Collaborate with units on campus to create and place content that strengthens positive understanding of Evergreen's unique value to prospective students, opinion leaders, and the community.
- Lead strategic efforts across the Marketing and Communications team to identify newsworthy stories, write and distribute them on Evergreen media properties (web and social media), and/or distribute them to local, regional, and national media.
Communications
- Advise and support college leadership and others to respond to media inquiries, making recommendations on responses and preparing leaders for media engagement.
- Serve as the main custodian of the college's multiple social media platforms and emergency communication tools, coordinating with colleagues to push out pertinent marketing and communications content and using the channels for other communication as needed.
- Coordinate with college leadership and the college's health and safety team to prepare and maintain crisis communications plans and serve as the primary communicator for response in such events, including advising college leadership, leading internal communications, and managing information dissemination with appropriate local, state, and federal officials.
General Duties
- Supervise staff, including interviewing, providing training and staff development, conducting performance evaluations, taking corrective counseling and/or disciplinary action, making work assignments and scheduling decisions, managing overtime, and acting on leave requests and work certifications.
- Represent Marketing and Communications on important cross-campus committees, including Senior Leadership Team and emergency preparedness teams.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities |
- Knowledge of professional media relations practices and higher education marketing, including effective ways to respond to media inquiries and encourage positive coverage of college activities, both in normal operations and crisis.
- Strong understanding of content marketing principles and best practices.
- Excellent writing, editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills.
- Strategic thinking and ability to align content with business goals.
- Data analysis and reporting skills to measure content performance.
- Project management skills to manage content timelines and deadlines.

- Tactical knowledge of major social media platforms and the ability to define and leverage social media opportunities, integration, and content strategy.
- Ability to prepare and maintain crisis communications plans and serve as the primary communicator during emergency events.
- Understanding of higher education organization and operations and the ability to successfully work in an educational setting.

Minimum Qualifications |
- Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
- Five years of progressively responsible professional experience in communications, marketing, and/or community outreach/media relations, including experience in a public affairs/public relations or news-gathering setting, serving as an outreach coordinator or primary media contact for an organization, and experience with internal organizational communications.
- Demonstrated success earning media on local, regional, and/or national levels.
- Experience initiating, maintaining, and using social media, with advanced knowledge of social media platforms, use, metrics, opportunities, integration, and content strategy.

Desired Qualifications |
- Experience as a media spokesperson or emergency communicator.
- Established media contacts, especially in the Pacific Northwest or higher education media.
- Community relations, public affairs, and/or public relations agency experience, preferably in higher education.
- Supervisory experience, especially with creative services teams and content producers.

Conditions of Employment |
- Must provide proof of identity and employment eligibility within three days of beginning work.
- Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.
