The Broward County Board of County Commissioners is seeking qualified candidates for Maintenance Worker.



General Description

The Maintenance Worker is responsible for supporting port operations by providing water service connections to docked vessels, operating equipment for waste disposal, and assisting with recycling and refuse collection. This role requires hands-on work with tools and equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operations around cruise liners, cargo vessels, petroleum tankers, and commercial/industrial facilities. Performs a variety of general building and grounds related maintenance and repairs at an assigned facility. Works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks. Must be flexible to work a rotating 24/7 schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires three (3) months in maintenance or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses Required
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License at the time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) within 60 days of employment and for the duration of employment.
Ability to secure and maintain a valid Seaport Business Purpose Credential for the duration of employment.

Preferences

  • Previous experience in port operations, maintenance, or related field preferred.
  • CDL a plus

SCOPE OF WORK

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.

  • Connect and disconnect ship water services, including installing pipe fittings on water boxes, using various handheld manual tools and recording water meter readings.
  • Operate trucks and equipment to collect and dispose of refuse from commercial and industrial sectors.
  • Perform manual handling of trash, recycling, and refuse carts; empty materials into collection vehicles.
  • Assemble, distribute, and clean recycling and refuse carts for customers.
  • Ensure safe and proper use of manual tools and operational equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of water usage and service activities.
  • Perform routine inspections and basic maintenance of equipment and work areas.
  • Follow all safety protocols and port regulations while working independently or as part of a team.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and vessel
  • Performs related work as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Physical Demands

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

Performs medium to heavy work that involves walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Involves routine and frequent exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals.
