Position Highlights The College of Information Science is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced advisor to join our team and work with our undergraduate students. The advisor will develop and implement strategies, processes, and learning experiences that support achievement of desired academic and career outcomes including the overall student experience. The advisor will assist students in successfully integrating into the institution's environment and thriving personally and academically.
The advisor serves as the frontline contact for undergraduate students for developmental and appreciative academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. This role plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention. Builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Academic Advisors have authority to approve students' academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty. The advisor maintains extensive industry and institutional knowledge and expertise in interpreting and improving advising practices.

Duties & Responsibilities

Student Advisement

  • Independently advises students and continually reflects on optimization of advising processes in place in the College of Information Science.
  • Assesses individual students' academic and career development stages and promotes their growth by determining suitable tasks and helping students set suitable goals as well as make decisions about degree programs and career options.
  • Evaluates use of transfer credit for students and also the transfer agreements for the College of Information Science more generally.
  • Identifies educational and career options appropriate for each student and assists students with evaluating each option, including possible outcomes and their implications
  • Monitors students' academic progress, determines satisfactory progress toward degree, and assists students in degree completion.
  • Engages in the assessment of students' needs (e.g., study skills, tutoring) and designs plans for students to address those needs.
  • Advises students with academic difficulty on development of an academic action plan, and refers students to appropriate campus resources for assistance as needed.
  • Manages student records following all legal regulations and policies.
  • Develops solutions to a wide variety of problems that emerge in a complex college environment and works on projects that require creative and strategic thinking, individually determining in each scenario the best course of action to achieve intended results.
  • Leads newer advisors, trains peer advisors, and manages interns.
  • Thinks strategically to improve students' experiences, broadly conceived, in the College of Information Science.

Service to the College

  • Participates in committees such as those focused on curriculum, scholarships, or student support.
  • Assists with college ceremonies, convocations, student awards, and related activities.

Service to the University

  • Assists with Transfer and Freshmen Orientation, including evaluating incoming students' credits, representing their majors to incoming families and students, and making referrals to appropriate resources.
  • Represents the College of Information Science when interfacing with students, parents, alumni, and other stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively with different groups/individuals
  • Extensive Knowledge of advising norms, processes, and concepts.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience advising Main Campus students at the University of Arizona
  • Experience advising online undergraduate students.
  • Experience with academic advising in disciplines such as Information Science, Data Science, Game Development, or similar areas.
  • Proficiency with University of Arizona systems
