Job Summary

Provides leadership in the planning, development, monitoring and evaluation of an overall strategy for communications, internal and external public relations, media relations and community relations, digital media, and marketing activities to support the mission and work of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (FKNMS). Provides leadership and guidance to other personnel working in support of the educational and scientific missions of the sanctuary.

  • Provides overall vision, leadership, and management for communications, public, media and community relations, and marketing strategies for FKNMS. Collaborates with FKNMS superintendent and Office of National Marine Sanctuaries media director.
  • Oversees development of media and outreach strategies for all operations, strategic initiatives and special projects with responsibility for delivering results. Assists with developing clear goals and objectives for FKNMS, identifying strategic milestones and monitoring performance.
  • As the media point of contact, oversees development of processes, procedures, and content for marketing and communications, including creation and dissemination of media (print, web, release, TV, video, social) to convey FKNMS policy, conservation efforts, management processes and resource protection to local, regional and national audiences.
  • Reviews signage, exhibits, and other educational materials developed for visitor centers, distribution to the general public, and use in the field for compliance with typographic standards.
  • Participates as a member of the FKNMS Media, Outreach, Volunteer, and Education (MOVE) team. Collaborates on other MOVE initiatives and projects, and supports core MOVE team responsibilities including participation in outreach events and delivering public presentations.
  • Establishes and maintains frequent contact and mutual communications between FKNMS and the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, industry professionals, businesses, universities, government agencies, and the general public; advise FKNMS leadership on policy formulation; promote communications with influential and decision-making audiences to encourage understanding and support of agency objectives; establish and foster necessary rapport with all levels of personnel and external constituencies.
  • Assist FKNMS superintendent with the development and implementation of community and business relations. Assists with major events and supports the site's communication strategy by representing FKNMS in local, regional, state and national forums.
  • Establishes media training and protocols for FKNMS staff and leadership as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains data collection and reporting on communications, public relations and marketing efforts for FKNMS.
  • Assigns and edits content for new stories, press releases, radio spots and digital communications (including websites) on behalf of FKNMS; edits speeches and/or talking points for leadership or staff representing FKNMS.
  • Identifies and analyzes problems. Advises on and makes decisions about appropriate course of action for marketing and communications
  • Conducts market research and tracks public relations, marketing and educational trends to support innovative communications efforts. Provides input on the budget and cost-effective marketing opportunities and utilizes shared technology platforms to oversee project implementation.
  • Oversees crisis communications and/or handles confidential matters on behalf of FKNMS.
  • Performs essential duties in any emergencies such as hurricanes, public health emergencies, and/or any other university emergency closing. The employee is expected to be available to report to work as needed during university emergency closing with appropriate notification of a department administrator.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or related field with four (4) years of experience in social media tools, marketing, and advertising or Master's degree in Marketing, Advertising, Communications, or related field with two (2) years of experience in social media tools, marketing, and advertising.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience creating and implementing a cohesive media strategy and campaign.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing a major outreach and education campaign, including coordination with governmental agencies, universities and the public.
