Assistant Controller

Whippany Actuation Systems, a fast-paced and innovative aerospace manufacturer specializing in electromechanical actuators for both commercial and military applications, is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical professional to join our finance team as our Assistant Controller. In this role, your primary focus will be supporting the Vice President of Finance by overseeing the company's day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting in compliance with GAAP and internal controls. You will act as a key liaison between finance, operations, and manufacturing, providing leadership in cost accounting, inventory management, budgeting, and forecasting. You will also supervise accounting staff, drive process improvements, and support strategic decision-making to improve financial performance.

In this role, you would typically:



  • Lead month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reporting within established deadlines.
  • Maintain the general ledger and chart of accounts to ensure alignment with company structure and reporting needs.
  • Develop and monitor forecasts, budgets, and financial models in support of business objectives.
  • Oversee cost accounting activities, including product cost standards, overhead rates, cost roll-ups, and inventory accuracy.
  • Analyze budget vs. actual results; prepare variance analysis and recommend corrective actions.
  • Coordinate preparation of monthly/quarterly/annual financial statements and schedules for internal and external auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with SOX/internal controls, corporate accounting policies, and government/ITAR export regulations (as applicable).
  • Support pricing, profitability, and make-buy decisions through detailed cost and margin analysis.
  • Provide financial and business analysis to identify opportunities for productivity.
  • Supervise and develop staff.



We require:



  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field.
  • 5 years of progressive accounting/finance experience, inclusive of leadership/supervisory experience.
  • Manufacturing industry experience.
  • Knowledge of GAAP and regulations.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Authorization to work in the US



Eligibility Requirements:

This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to export-controlled technology. Whippany Actuation Systems will require proof of status before employment.

We would really like to see:



  • MBA and/or CPA.
  • Experience with government proposals / costing / pricing, or ITC compliance.
  • Infor Syteline ERP proficiency.
  • Aerospace/defense background
  • Knowledge of payroll regulations, procedures, and experience processing payroll through ADP Workforce Now or Vantage.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team environment
  • Bias for action. Ability to recognize problems, drive resolution, and follow through to completion.
  • Results-oriented. Drives to achieve both short- and long-term goals.
  • Innovative/Creative - drives to develop proprietary, product-differentiating technologies.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.



Compensation and Benefits:
The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $145,000 to $165,000 per year. Final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. If hired, the employee will be in an "at-will position."
