Join our team as a Engineering Tech III!
Protolabs is seeking a skilled, detail-oriented, independent machinist to work directly with our CNC Engineering & manufacturing team(s). The role requires an elevated understanding of machining practices & principles. Candidates will often be reworking features/geometries on live production orders that were manufactured in our state of the art, ever evolving, automated CNC machining processes.

What you will do
  • Independently produce CAD/CAM programs Via Master-Cam software
  • Design quick & efficient fixturing/work holding solutions
  • Setup/Operate Haas VF2 3-Axis CNC milling machines in a laboratory like environment
  • Maintain production tooling & inventory
  • Independently inspect/maintain QC conformance through small quantity production runs
  • Perform cleaning and general maintenance on milling or machines and general shop equipment
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, such as R&D exercises
  • Continuously meet/provide observational feedback to MFG ENG & Production teams
  • Leads the implementation of manufacturing best practices in partnership with Engineers
  • Leads and facilitates continuous improvement changes (including 5S activities) alongside engineers through the implementation of projects to improve results
  • Collaborates with engineers to investigate process issues to understand and determine root causes
  • Coach, mentor, and trainer for other technicians. May provide training and instruction to other production personnel.
  • Documents operating procedures and provide training and instructions to other production personnel.
  • Supports projects related to new production equipment, process improvement, cost reductions, and new product introductions
  • Troubleshoot production problems as needed. Identify manufacturing bottlenecks and quality issues. Identify potential design improvements and alternatives.
  • Perform additional tasks, other duties, and responsibilities as assigned.
What it takes
  • HS Diploma or Trade School Certification
  • Minimum of 7 years of applicable manufacturing experience
  • Completion of an Apprenticeship Program and/or extensive training in machining practices
  • Technical or Vocational Certificate in CNC Machining, Machine Tool Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or similar
  • Associate's degree in advanced manufacturing Machine Tool Technology, or Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • 7+ Years of applicable MFG Experience
  • Experience working within an engineering or R&D environment

Work Environment:
Indoors (A/C); nonsmoking; the majority of this job function is performed in a manufacturing area exposed to machinery and noise; with eye protection and safety shoes required. Occasionally works in outside weather conditions. Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
