As an Assistant Design Project Manager, you will manage projects and studies for primary and ancillary structures at Dulles Washington International Airport (IAD) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Assistant Design Project Manager

Serves in the Design Department in the Office of Engineering at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Serves as the Assistant Design Project Manager for capital projects at DCA and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), focusing primarily on Aviation Enterprise Capital Construction Program (CCP) projects. Performs related functions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Supports program, project, and contract management.

Assists senior staff in the design management activities of the team employed by the principal management consultant for major capital projects and supporting or miscellaneous capital projects that include architectural design components.

Assists in monitoring new designs in progress and reviews work to ensure compliance with Airports Authority Design Manual requirements, building code requirements, industry standards, and best practices.

Assists in the development of design progress reports and design and construction schedules.

Coordinates with designers on contractor-submitted items to ensure the design intent is accomplished in construction.

Assists in the review of architectural designs and contract documents managed by others to ensure project interdependencies are coordinated.

Assists staff with coordinating the work activities of a number of consultants assigned to the Airports Authority's Terminal

Expansion/Redevelopment program, including establishing work schedules, assignments, and priorities.

Helps evaluate the aesthetics of structures and indoor/outdoor spaces, ensure proper scales of design, and select and match materials and colors.

Assists with plans for design projects covering the development, procurement, and design phases, as well as with design support during construction.

Assists in developing functional and aesthetic requirements, criteria, preliminary studies, work scope, budgets, schedules, and solicitation packages.

Assists in developing products that ensure an appropriate blend of cost, aesthetics, functionality, constructability, maintainability, and sustainability.

Acts as a Contracting Officer's Technical Representative (COTR) to help evaluate bids, perform technical reviews, lead or participate in panels to select consultants and contractors, and manage contracts during the design phase. Maintains liaison with procurement officials before and throughout construction.

Coordinates the design A/E firm's provision of construction phase services to ensure procedures and processes are correctly followed for submittals and to facilitate project meetings and site visits, correspondence, and processing of Requests for Information.

Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Six years of progressively responsible experience in design and design management including monitoring new designs in progress to ensure they functional and aesthetic requirements, building code requirements, industry standards, and best practices.

Ability to prepare or recommend system and facility studies and designs, and provide technical advice to evaluate design and construction bids.

Comprehensive professional knowledge of architectural principles and practices and aesthetic and functional building considerations and ability to apply them to designing projects and studies for primary and ancillary structures, managing contracts, and performing quality control activities.

Ability to incorporate constructability, maintainability and sustainability with functionality and aesthetics in designing projects and studies and reviewing others' work.

Knowledge of key Federal, state and local regulations and codes sufficient to advise on the full range of design and construction issues.

Ability to perform detailed analysis of data and information and make recommendations.

Ability to speak and write effectively.

Skill in using computer and office suite software, with emphasis on engineering and architectural design and project management systems/software.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience with design projects for an airport.

EDUCATION

A Bachelors' Degree in Architecture, or related field.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED

A state driver's license in good standing.

NECESSARY SPECIAL FACTORS

Operates vehicle landside and airside (requires AOA permit).

Work is typically reviewed in progress and upon completion for quantity, quality, timeliness, teamwork, customer service, and other factors.

May be required to occasionally work nights and weekends depending on project schedules, airport operations and other factors.

May be exposed to some adverse weather conditions and dust, grease, dirt, loud noise, hazardous substances, and moving equipment and vehicles when visiting work sites. Wears personal protective equipment, as needed, at work sites.

A background security investigation will be required for all new hires.
