Paralegal, Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Job Overview:

RWJBarnabas Health, a leading academic health system in New Jersey, is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Paralegal to join its Legal Affairs Department. This role will support the Associate Counsel and Vice President of Legal Affairs Personal Injury Protection department in managing legal matters related to PIP issues within the organization. The ideal candidate will have medical billing and coding knowledge and at least five years of paralegal experience, preferably in a corporate or law firm setting. While experience in PIP law is a plus, it is not required.

Reports to:

  • The Paralegal, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) reports directly to the Assistant General Counsel, Litigation

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a corporate legal department or law firm, preferably with healthcare, nonprofit, or highly regulated industry experience.
  • Familiarity with healthcare compliance issues including HIPAA, Stark Law, Anti-Kickback Statute, and CMS guidelines is highly desirable.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities from multiple attorneys in a fast-paced environment.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Experience with document management systems and/or contract lifecycle management systems e.g., iManage, Contraxx, DocuSign CLM, etc.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Collaborative and proactive approach.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a large health system or complex nonprofit organization.
  • Exposure to enterprise-wide contracting practices and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of AI-enabled legal tools or experience in and/or interest in supporting digital innovation in legal workflows.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide paralegal support for the legal team in PIP-related matters, including documentation, case management, and research.
  • Draft, review, and organize post-service appeals, legal documents, correspondence, and agreements.
  • Maintain and manage legal files, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and accessibility.
  • Support PIP attorney by compiling evidence, organizing documentation, and preparing summaries.
  • Conduct legal research on PIP law issues and prepare memoranda as needed.
  • Assist in the preparation of training materials, presentations, and reports for internal stakeholders.
  • Track deadlines, filings, and compliance requirements related to PIP law matters.
  • Coordinate with outside counsel and internal departments as needed.
