Discipline Engineer - Multidiscipline
Salary Range $151,500 - $212,000
Note for Salary This is the range within which SRNS expects the majority of qualified candidates would enter this role if offered. Actual offers may be more or less than the amounts shown depending on candidate's qualifications, experience, internal equity, and other factors.
Job Family Description Engineering roles perform engineering work in operations, production, construction, or maintenance environments. They may design and scale up manufacturing processes, instruments and equipment and tests manufactured products to maintain quality. They may plan, design, and estimate time and cost and oversees construction and maintenance of structures, facilities, systems, and components. They analyze and develop solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures. They develop and apply engineering standards and procedures and provide advice on issues within the engineering field.
Discipline Description Engineering - Multidiscipline personnel typically manage a multidiscipline group of engineers. Responsibilities are within the Engineering Function as a generalist or in a combination of disciplines.
Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include: Direct, lead, and manage Design Engineering Project Engineering design activities and functional area. Ensure successful execution and performance of design teams for multiple large projects, small projects, division managed modifications, and other operating division engineering support.
Major Responsibilities:
Direct the Design Engineering Project Engineering design activities and functional area. Lead and manage Project Engineers (PEs) to ensure that engineering and design is performed in accordance with stakeholder expectations, division and department procedures and requirements, and sound engineering practices.
Develop project design execution strategies and ensure cost effective design solutions are developed in accordance with requirements and stakeholder expectations for both self-perform and subcontracted design activities.
Ensure and maintain technical excellence of deliverables and support from design teams, including subcontracted designs. Resolve technical project issues by analyzing issues to determine specific elements requiring resolution, locating required expertise internally or externally; and, in some cases, reformulating a solution. Plan and develop discipline technical standards at the department, division, and industry levels. Participate in Department, Division, and National Codes, Standards, and Specification Committees. Participate in formal Design Review groups. Provide technical instruction to design project and discipline engineers to achieve required performance, cost, and quality objectives.
Interface with customers, stakeholders, Senior Management, NNSA, DOE, and DNFSB as required on key technical and performance issues in areas of Project Engineering.
Perform analysis of problems to identify root-cause and unfavorable trends. Establish a self-assessment review of discipline technical design products to identify and correct deficient performance through technical reviews of key and sampled design work processes and products
Review project status variance reports and trends. Provide direction to Project Engineers for corrective actions. Review and approve corrective action plans. Ensure a high level of design performance and customer satisfaction through continuous improvement in executing project engineering and design. Manage conflicts regarding customer requirements and project team design output. Present design conclusions and recommendations to the customer/sponsor, project team, and senior/external stakeholders as needed. Provide customer/sponsor support as required to ensure efficient and effective facility operations. Develop and manage forecasts and allocate resources to accomplish the area work objectives. Develop forecasts for resources, subcontractor support, and equipment procurements. Reconcile resource needs versus budgets, negotiate needs with resource managers, and assign resources as appropriate within the area. Lead or participate in department and site wide initiatives to resolve programmatic issues and to improve quality. Develop, coach, and empower PEs to address improvement areas and to provide growth and career opportunities.
Provide for career development professional advancement and cross discipline programs for engineering personnel by planning and mentoring individuals' training programs. Serve as mentor, develop internal training programs, and locate and obtain budget support for off-site training. Establish and direct programmatic activities for technical development, design productivity, and quality objectives; analyze organizational, technical, and business operations to identify needs and opportunities; develop program plan and budget requirements; obtain managerial approval and financial support for programs and manage programs to objectives.
Recruit, select, and assign appropriately skilled personnel and provide adequate resources to meet departmental objectives. Support staffing requirements from division plans and requirements of various design groups, establish staffing plans, external hiring strategies, and recruiting plans. Negotiate release and internal reassignment of discipline personnel. Ensure the performance of all personnel administrative functions, e.g., salary planning, performance appraisal, etc.
Required Qualifications * Fifteen or more YOE as an individual contributor in one or more of the roles managed plus six or more years of experience (YOE) in a relevant management role, OR Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field plus twelve or more years of experience (YOE) in one or more of the roles managed, OR Master's Degree in a relevant field plus eight or more years of experience (YOE) in one or more of the roles managed * Equivalencies to experience and education requirements will be considered
We'd Also Like to See Bachelors degree in Engineering or related technical degree and 15 years experience in engineering, project management or related field. This position applies complete mastery of engineering practices to ensure that designs are cost effective, in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental regulations, customer orders, Engineering Codes and Standards, and provide new concepts and innovative solutions when required. The incumbent must have a working knowledge of subcontracting and procurement practices. Experience in resolving complex technical problems and the ability to develop and articulate planning and execution strategies are essential. Well-developed team building, communications, planning, and organizational skills are essential.
It is required to understand design theory and process of multiple disciplines and provide technical guidance to the group. Also, the position requires identification of appropriate Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) from onsite and offsite resources to solve complex technical problems associated with new missions or plant modifications. It is also required to have extensive knowledge of engineering management, project management, quality assurance, and administrative practices in the nuclear industry. There must be an understanding of the risks and consequences of technical and managerial decisions, select and assign key technical resources, and develop/communicate solutions to complex and novel engineering and project problems to management and clients. Ongoing training in regulatory and various design codes for the disciplines and update training in department procedures for conduct of projects and design engineering is required. The position requires presentation to regulatory agencies (DNFSB, etc.) in support of the design approval process.
Knowledge of the Engineering principles and practices used in Chemical, Electrical, Fire Protection, Mechanical, Civil/Structural/Architectural, and Control Systems disciplines pertaining to the Nuclear and/or Chemical industry. Working knowledge of these various disciplines supervising professionals performing analysis using state of the art analysis techniques. Working knowledge of Nuclear Facilities and familiarity of Commercial practices.
