Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

This is a limited-service employment position in which apprentices will be hired to complete on-the-job training (OJT) and work under the guidance of a qualified Radiological Protection Inspector or instructor. The program is designed to train apprentices on the Radiological Protection processes to perform at the Entry Radiological Protection Inspector level. There is no guarantee of future full-time employment upon completion of the program.

Learn to independently perform simple or routine radiological control or Health Physics Technology functions or provide assistance to Career Level O2 Radiological Control Inspectors and Career Level O3 Senior Radiological Control Inspectors in more complex tasks. This job also serves as the training position for the Career Level O2 and Career Level O3.

The LSE Rad Con Apprentice will learn to perform the following responsibilities:

Work from site policies, procedures, textbooks, training curriculum. Work from directions from instructors while in the classroom (including mockup training) and from experienced radiological control inspectors, supervision, senior technicians, and technical leads while in the field.

Conduct contamination and radiation surveys in Radiological Buffer Areas, Controlled Areas, Radioactive Material Areas, Radiation Areas, Contamination Areas, High Contamination Areas, Airborne Radioactivity Areas, and non-controlled areas using standard survey techniques with portable contamination and radiation monitoring equipment. Conduct independent job coverage in Radiological Buffer Areas and Radioactive Material Areas.

Note: Although Contamination Area, High Contamination Area, Airborne Radioactivity Area, and Radiation Area surveys are part of this job description, these are not considered essential functions.

Conduct contamination and radiation surveys associated with radioactive material movements and transfers on-site and receipts from off-site. Conduct conditional and unconditional material release surveys.

Determine and update area radiation exposure rates, contamination levels, and airborne radioactivity levels and post area with appropriate signs and barricades.

Prepare dosimetry for issue and evaluation, operate whole body count equipment, receive bioassay samples, wrap instruments, issue personnel and area TLDs, deliver and receive instruments, dosimetry, and air samples, irradiate TLDs/EPDs, anneal TLDs, generate and affix barcode labels to TLDs, receive dosimetry records, and issue qualification/ID badges.

Operate counting room equipment utilizing approved procedures. All results will be documented for supervisor review and approval.

Perform support activities for dosimetry, calibrations, and air monitoring programs.

Audit personnel access to radiological areas.

Source check portable survey instruments upon receipt from Calibrations Facility and again after use, utilizing approved procedures. All results will be documented for supervisor review and approval.

Perform integrity/leak checks of radioactive sources.

Provide administrative support to radiological control program in field offices. An example of duties would include processing radiological work permit requests, issuing and controlling dosimetry inventory, radioactive source records, and completing forms and logs.

Demonstrate success in specific radiological control inspector training functions.

Perform other duties as assigned by supervision.

The specific essential duties are dependent on the particular assignment within the department.
Monitor Radiological Buffer Areas, Controlled Areas, Radioactive Material Areas, and non-controlled areas using appropriate portable contamination and radiation survey instruments weighing up to 25 pounds. May require limited use of protective clothing equipment.

Document all survey results.

Source check and control portable survey equipment and document results.

Provide administrative support to include record keeping, filing, and updating procedure manuals.

Perform assigned duties in dosimetry, calibration, and air sampling programs, which may involve lifting material weighing up to 25 pounds.

If participating in the radiological control inspector training program, demonstrate success and proficiency in the following:

* Using portable and fixed radiological monitoring equipment.
* Calculating radiation exposure rates, dose, airborne contamination, and environmental releases.
* Establishing appropriate control measures for radiological conditions.
* Determining appropriate monitoring dosimeters.
* Determining appropriate protective clothing and equipment.
* Donning, doffing, and function of various types of protective clothing and equipment.
* Demonstrating job coverage under stable radiological conditions in areas with radiological conditions <5 mrem/hr, <5Q Table 2-2 levels, and <0.1 DAC or <8 DAC-hr. (Note: There will be no independent job coverage in Contamination Areas, High Contamination Areas, Airborne Radioactivity Areas, Radiation Areas or High/Very High Radiation Areas)).
* Completing radiological control classroom training with a score of 80 or better on training material.
