Tufts University: School of Arts & Sciences: Chemistry Description Tufts University, Department of Chemistry is seeking a Part-Time Lecturer to teach our undergraduate Organic Chemistry I Lecture (Chem 51) in Spring 2026. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working closely with students and possesses an ability to support students with a range of educational backgrounds to develop in-depth reasoning about organic chemistry concepts. The instructor will be responsible for giving twice-a-week 75-minute lectures (offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30-11:45AM), offering weekly office hours for students, holding weekly meetings with lecture teaching assistants who teach weekly recitations, and designing, administering, and evaluating student assessments. If it is of interest, this course may also be taught interactively with the support of undergraduate learning assistants. Chem 51 is the only required Organic Chemistry course that students must take prior to enrolling in Biochemistry coursework, and therefore emphasizes carbonyl chemistry. Topics to be covered include: structure, bonding, conformational analysis, functional groups, organic reactions, synthesis, and mechanisms including acid/base reactions, nucleophilic substitutions and eliminations, reactions of alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, and amines. The required text is Klein Organic Chemistry, 5th edition, and the semester begins on January 14, 2026. | |
