Denver Sheriff Urban Institute Job Summary

Provides professional direct psychiatric midlevel care in accordance with contractual guidelines for an inpatient jail-based restoration program. Provides dedicated psychiatric care and is a liaison between Denver Health & Housing Authority and the Colorado Department of Human Services.
The Correctional Care staff provide clinical care in environments with a higher level of clinical acuity and environmental hazard than inpatient and ambulatory settings based on the nature of the facilities and patient population. Environmental awareness, critical thinking, and decisive decision-making skills are required in the correctional care setting.

Essential Functions:
  • Diagnose
    * Evaluate and create initial care plans to clearly identify individual client needs for stability to improve outcomes for competency related services while ensuring appropriate psychiatric care for each individual.
    * Evaluates emotional components, the impact of health related issues and assists clients to identify and meet treatment goals.
    * Orders initial and/or routine laboratory tests and follow-up on results, orders additional tests or initiates referral appointments with specialized caregivers.
    * Initiates a unique, outcome focused plan of care based on current nursing practice with measurable outcomes and goals for the patient/family.

  • Collaboration
    * Collaborates with the Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health in providing the psychiatric lead for inpatient care for individuals receiving care in the Restoration and Transition Unit.
    * Collaborates with other health care professionals in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for individuals.
    * Collaborates with Risk Management to resolve identified and potential problems (i.e. Sentinel events) and ensures proper reporting of events as dictated by policy.
    * Collaborates with experienced investigator on a research project or develops a research project.
    * Coordinates care with multidisciplinary team.

  • Documentation & Data Collection
    * Provides documentation outlined within the standard of work for inpatient care to ensure compliance with contractual guidelines for daily operations, collaboration with legal entities, and coordination of transitional care.
    * Performs documentation audits and develops any new documentation required to meet the requirements of the regulatory agencies.
    * Documents initial admission/shift assessments per unit-specific guideline of care. Ensures daily goals and plan of care transcribed and complete.
    * Collects data to promote self, unit and hospital improvement.
    * Integrates research behaviors into clinical practice by demonstrating awareness of research findings, identifying areas of practice that can be improved through research utilization and assisting in research.

  • Treat
    * Meets basic standards of care documented in the standard of work including frequency of visits as outlined.
    * Anticipates and identifies issues and initiates resolutions for the corrections mental health patient population.
    * Monitors and evaluates the psychiatric condition of the patient and in collaboration with the psychiatrist and other disciplines and standards of care or applying appropriate protocols, make decisions regarding treatment changes.
    * Analyzes the assessment data in order to formulate a unique plan of care through identified needs. Identifies and reports any abnormalities in assessment data.
    * Evaluates, modifies and provides safe drug dosage as necessary and collaborates with the MD to assure safe sedation and monitoring tailored to the individual patients need.
    * Prescribes appropriate medications in accordance with pharmaceutical guidelines and standards of practice.
    * Writes orders, and evaluates patient's diagnostic and therapeutic services.
    * Refers patients to specialized services as needed.

Education:
  • Master's Degree Psychiatric/Mental Health discipline Required

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years One year experience in midlevel psychiatric practice. Required

Licenses:
  • NPPRSCAU-Nurse Practitioner Prescriptive Authority - AANPCB - American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board Required and
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
  • APNA-Advanced Practice Mental Health Nursing - ANCC - American Nurses Credentialing Center Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Is knowledgeable and compliant with all regulatory standards, including specialty (i.e. Corrections) level requirements
  • Knowledge of major concepts, principles and theories related to drug, alcohol and psychiatric disease processes.
  • Knowledge of individual and group dynamics and treatment methods to assist client in achieving goals.
  • Skill in preparing written reports, medical records, and other documentation.
  • Ability to be involved actively in multidisciplinary teams relevant to quality improvement.
  • Ability to serve as a consultant to resolve/discuss ethical issues.
  • Ability to use computers and computer systems.
  • Ability to Drive to different DH locations may be required in this position. If so, a valid driver's license is required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Knowledge of the EPIC Electronic Health Record System
