Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated Analytical Chemistry Postdoctoral Researcher to join our dynamic team and play a key role in pushing the boundaries of analytical chemistry with advanced LC-MS techniques. Tackle complex analytical challenges using state-of-the-art instrumentation and innovative approaches. Lead method development for both targeted and untargeted analyses, apply high-resolution mass spectrometry for structural elucidation, and contribute to research projects with significant real-world impact.

As part of our multidisciplinary group, you will collaborate with experts in chemistry, biology, and forensic science, leveraging your LC-MS expertise to address research needs of national security importance. Your work will directly support unique federal law enforcement efforts performing forensic analysis and conducting critical R&D with high-impact consequences. This position offers hands-on experience with groundbreaking technologies, providing a platform for publishing your discoveries, and opportunities to expand your expertise in small molecule and proteomic analyses. The role is based in the Forensic Sciences and Assessment Group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division, within the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate and is matrixed to LLNL's Forensic Science Center, a national security asset with expertise in state-of-the-art analytical forensic chemistry.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

You will

  • Exploit diverse real-world samples by unraveling the molecular composition and forensic meaning of complex, unknown materials using high-resolution mass spectrometry and advanced data analytics.
  • Drive innovation by collaborating with scientists, planning experimental campaigns, and coordinating resources to deliver breakthrough research outcomes.
  • Research, design, and execute targeted and untargeted chemical analyses across a wide range of analytes.
  • Pursue independent, complementary research interests including writing prospective proposals, engaging with a broad network of scientists within and outside the laboratory.
  • Develop research plans, interpret results, and communicate findings through peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences, including sponsors, stakeholders, and scientific conferences.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot analytical instrumentation (HPLC/UHPLC, LC-MS, and associated detection technologies).
  • Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks, documenting all processes and procedures, and ensure compliance with ethical, institutional, regulatory, and safety policies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance (U.S. Citizenship required).
  • PhD in Chemistry, Biology, Forensic Science, or a related field.
  • Experience with applied organic mass spectrometry, particularly in developing and utilizing LC-MS methods, including high-resolution mass spectrometry (e.g., Orbitrap or TOF) and MS/MS techniques.
  • Familiarity with complimentary spectrometric techniques (e.g., GC-MS) and analytical methodologies (NMR, IR, UV).
  • Advanced organization and time-management skills, with adaptability to dynamic research priorities and the ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills for effective interaction with scientists, engineers, and technical/administrative staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with forensic laboratory operations, including ISO17025 quality management requirements.
  • Advanced skills in chromatographic separations, LC-MS method optimization, and application to diverse molecular classes (small molecules, peptides, proteins).
  • Experience with untargeted analysis to identify small molecules, peptides, and proteins of interest, including de novo proteomics.
  • Demonstrated success in presenting and publishing research to broad scientific and stakeholder audiences.
  • Familiarity with data analysis workflows, chemometrics, or bioinformatics relevant to analytical chemistry.
