Metallurgist Senior Technology - Metallurgy Special Projects Job Description Summary: Carpenter Technology is seeking a Senior Metallurgist to provide metallurgical support for our Ultrasonic Characterization Cell, a specialized process used for advanced materials characterization of high-performance alloys, including Ni-based superalloys. This role is critical to ensuring accurate characterization of samples, process health, and data integrity of the characterization cell. Primary Responsibilities for the Metallurgist Senior Technology - Metallurgy Special Projects:
- Provide metallurgical support for all ultrasonic characterization (pinpoint) cell operations.
- Perform characterization based on non-destructive testing, LOM (Light Optical Microscopy), and SEM/EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) data.
- Provide timely analysis and insight to support production operations including melting, remelting, and hot working.
- Ensure ultrasonic pinpoint cell process health, reliability, and performance.
- Coordinate project teams consisting of interdisciplinary members from product metallurgy, process metallurgy, NDT, and R&D.
- Provide insight on characterization results based on deep understanding of how processing affects metallurgical properties.
- Recommend advanced characterization techniques (e.g., EPMA) as needed.
- Perform metallurgical evaluations and deliver timely results to internal teams and external customers.
- Report ultrasonic pinpoint data and support analytical documentation and regulatory reporting.
- Serve as the metallurgical liaison for customer-facing communications involving ultrasonic pinpoint characterization data.
- Regularly present results to stakeholders from varying technical backgrounds.
- Conduct statistical analysis of characterization results to identify trends and support manufacturing process optimization.
- Use data to identify projects aligned with Company objectives.
- Identify opportunities for ultrasonic characterization cell to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required for the Metallurgist Senior Technology - Metallurgy Special Projects:
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field required
- 4+ years relevant experience required.
- Specialized knowledge of metallurgical principles, standard, methods, and practices.
- Familiarity with Ultrasonic inspection method and principles.
- Ability to coordinate project team consisting of interdisciplinary members.
- Strong ability to problem solve and apply critical thinking to novel problems.
- Comfort with public speaking and presenting to large groups.
- Familiarity with failure analysis techniques.
- Ability to learn about unfamiliar concepts quickly.
- Specialized knowledge in materials characterization.
- Knowledge of how manufacturing process influences metallurgical structure.
- Ability to interpret LOM and SEM/EDS results.
- Ability to recommend novel testing and characterization methods as needed.
- Proficient at assembling reports and communicating technical data.
- Proficient at written and oral communication.
- Proficient with basic statistical methods and SPC.
- Ability to define metrics to quantify metallurgical quality of the material the company produces.
- Motivation to mentor other metallurgists and non-technical roles.
- Good time management skills.
- Effectively manages small projects or sub-teams, including coordination of resources outside of own area. Forecasts and plans resource requirements for small projects or sub-teams.
