Are you a hardworking Engineering Manager. API Technologies looking for an excellent opportunity? This could be a tremendous role to explore!

Aon is in the business of better decisions.

At Aon, we shape decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world. As an organization, we are united through trust as one inclusive, diverse team, and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed.

What the day will look like

At Aon, as the Engineering Manager, of an Application Programming Interface (API) group, you will lead a team of engineers and vendors to deliver scalable, high-quality API solutions. Your role combines technical leadership with strategic alignment, staying hands-on through design reviews and code exemplars while coordinating closely with Product and Architecture to define the API roadmap and standards.

The person in this role will be responsible for the API catalog and developer portal, ensuring documentation and SDKs remain current, and work with Service Managers to align API capabilities with business needs. Leading all aspects of the entire API lifecycle, the individual in this role will handle versioning, compatibility, deprecation, and migration to ensure smooth transitions for all users.

You will maintain robust CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps, drive comprehensive testing, and provide self-serve environments for partners. Platform operations will be driven by a strong emphasis on observability, security, and incident response, applying tools like DataDog and New Relic.

Vendor management will be a part of the remit, ensuring delivery to standards and effective knowledge transfer. Throughout, you will champion continuous improvement and strong cross-team collaboration, ensuring the API platform consistently delivers business value!

Responsibilities:
  • Deliver new versions of core APIs, setting clear SLAs and SLOs while providing a structured deprecation path for legacy endpoints.
  • Create and maintain golden paths for API development, including OpenAPI-first workflows, contracts, and reusable CI/CD templates.
  • Standardize error handling and HTTP status codes, ensuring consistent use of correlation IDs and trace propagation for observability.
  • Integrate non-functional requirements into delivery, performance metrics such as latency, availability, and throughput. Track adoption through usage key performance indicators.
  • Lead capacity planning and load testing, applying resilience patterns like retries, idempotency, and circuit breakers, and conducting regular chaos testing.
  • Responsible for client onboarding processes, leading API credentials, key rotation, rate limits, and quotas to ensure secure and efficient access.
  • Coordinate change calendars and lead cross-team dependencies to keep multiple concurrent workstreams aligned.
  • Ensure services remain audit-ready by maintaining strict access controls, change logs, data retention policies, and compliance evidence within delivery pipelines.
  • Optimize infrastructure and resource costs by right-sizing compute, caching, and data storage while maintaining service levels.
  • Champion team growth through regular one-on-one meetings, actionable feedback, collaborative sessions, and clear performance expectations.
Skills and Experience That Will Lead to Success
  • At least 7 years of software engineering experience, including 2+ leading API teams or delivery as a technical lead or engineering manager
  • Deep expertise in .NET 9 Core, with a strong understanding of modern API design and implementation
  • Advanced experience with Azure services, including API Management, AKS (Kubernetes), Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Service Bus, and Event Hubs
  • Proficiency in OpenAPI/Swagger, schema governance, semantic versioning, and backward-compatibility strategies
  • Bake NFRs into DoD: p95/p99 latency, availability, throughput, startup time; track adoption and usage KPIs.
  • Hands-on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps (YAML), using trunk-based development, feature flags, and code ownership practices
  • Demonstrated ability to implement and manage robust testing strategies, including contract testing (such as Pact), performance testing (k6 or JMeter), mocks, stubs, and automated pipeline gates
  • Strong background in observability, including distributed tracing, RED/USE metrics, SLOs, error budgets, and burn-rate alerting
  • Proven experience delivering secure APIs, with practical knowledge of OAuth2, mTLS, threat modeling, and secrets management
  • Solid understanding of data fundamentals, including SQL modeling, indexing, idempotency, and event-driven patterns
  • Practical experience managing vendor relationships, setting measurable SLAs, and ensuring knowledge transfer through gated deliveries
  • Effective cross-team collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to align technical work with business objectives
  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent professional experience
Preferred
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code (Terraform), policy as code, and cloud cost optimization
  • Experience supporting partner or externally facing APIs, including developer portal management, quota enforcement, and monetization strategies
  • Understanding of compliance frameworks such as PCI or SOX, with experience maintaining audit-ready SDLC processes
