Position Description

Performs advanced, specialized work in the planning, conducting, and/or supervising of original research. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on accomplishment of assigned objectives and overall effectiveness of project. May supervise research and student assistants. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.

Major/Essential Functions

Performs advanced, specialized work in the planning, conducting, and/or supervising of original research. Responsible for participating in, planning, scheduling and/or supervising research projects and the interpretation of the results for publication.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In-depth knowledge of mitochondrial biology, particularly VDAC1 function, mitofusin-mediated fusion/fission, and mitophagy pathways (e.g., PINK1/Parkin).

  1. Strong understanding of neurodegenerative disease mechanisms, especially those relevant to Alzheimer's disease.
  2. Familiarity with protein-protein interactions, mitochondrial dynamics, and neuronal cell signaling.

Required Qualifications

Doctoral degree (Ph. D.) or specialized academic training beyond the Bachelor's level in a specialized field equivalent to a Doctoral degree. Two years research experience; knowledge of modern research practices, the methods, resources and standards thereof.

Preferred Qualifications


  1. Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related biomedical science field.
  2. 3+ years of postdoctoral or equivalent research experience, preferably in mitochondrial biology, neurodegeneration, or Alzheimer's disease.
  3. Proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in relevant areas such as mitochondrial dynamics, neurodegeneration, or autophagy.
  4. Experience in leading or coordinating research projects and mentoring junior lab personnel.
  5. Familiarity with NIH-funded research environments and compliance with research regulations and reporting requirements.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  1. Expertise in mitochondrial imaging and live-cell assays
  2. Prior research experience in Alzheimer's disease models, including transgenic mice, iPSC-derived neurons, or human brain tissue.
  3. Previous authorship or co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications related to neurodegeneration or mitochondrial biology.
  4. Ability to coordinate across multiple labs or core facilities, demonstrating leadership in collaborative research settings.
