This position provides legal advice and counsel to the business operations of UnitedHealthcare, including Program Integrity (fraud and payment integrity).

The position requires the ability to analyze and provide counsel on complex legal and operational issues and/or processes across a variety of topics, including, but not limited to: fraud, waste and abuse, payment integrity, special investigations, litigation support, claim payment strategy and policy development, affordability initiatives, and other core operations areas.

The position requires the ability to advise on the implementation of federal and/or state legal/regulatory requirements impacting the health care industry and the operational complexities resulting from those requirements; advising on risk management; provider, customer and regulator inquiries, and evaluating appropriate legal course of action to meet various business objectives.

The position requires the ability to determine when guidance from senior counsel in areas outside technical knowledge or skill set is needed, and an ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and other internal and external company contacts.

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide legal counsel to the UnitedHealthcare Special Investigations Unit regarding fraud, waste, and abuse and related issues
  • Provide legal counsel to UnitedHealthcare Payment Integrity regarding claim reviews and audits, payment strategy and policy development
  • Work with teams across the organization to drive results/outcomes
  • Advise on the implementation of federal and/or state legal/regulatory requirements impacting the health care industry (particularly in the topics specified above) and the operational complexities resulting from those requirements
  • Provide support for litigation, dispute resolution, and risk mitigation
  • Evaluate the appropriate legal course of action to meet business objectives and advise senior legal and business leaders
  • Be a strategic partner to help the business achieve its goals

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate degree
  • Current, active licensure
  • 5+ years of professional legal experience practicing litigation or health care law in a law firm, government or corporate environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with regulatory agencies focused on the health care industry
  • Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects and ability to evaluate and determine appropriate course of legal action to meet business needs
  • Knowledge of state and federal health care, insurance, and related laws
  • Proven excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills; and proven success in managing multiple, complex matters on a variety of topics simultaneously and in collaboration across a matrixed business and legal environment
  • Proven ability to drive results
  • Proven ability to work effectively in an ambiguous environment
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, results-oriented workplace
  • Proven ability to prioritize and work effectively under time constraints
  • Proven ability to build and maintain rapport with superiors, peers, subordinates, and external company contacts

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). No matter where or when you begin a career with us, you'll find a far-reaching choice of benefits and incentives. The salary for this role will range from $132,200 to $226,600 annually based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
