Building Engineer Apprentice - IUOE Local 399 - JLL

What this job involves:

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Apprentice-Trainee Engineer to join our comprehensive three-year training program designed to prepare individuals for a career as a qualified Engineer. This entry-level position combines hands-on experience in building maintenance and operations with formal education at Local 399 school, working alongside experienced Engineers to maintain, monitor, and repair various building systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire safety. As you progress through the apprenticeship, you will take on increasingly complex tasks while developing technical skills, workplace safety knowledge, and critical system standards understanding that will prepare you for a rewarding career as a qualified Engineer capable of efficiently maintaining and operating building systems.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • At the direction of your supervisor, maintain, monitor, and perform preventive maintenance on all building systems including fire/life safety, mechanical (HVAC, plumbing, controls), electrical (lighting, UPS, PDU, generators, primary switch gear), and emergency backup systems.
  • Install and repair plumbing/piping/tubing, wire single and three phase motors, run conduit, and pull wiring to machinery and operating parts.
  • Monitor operation, repair, and maintain refrigeration, water-cooling, air-conditioning equipment, boilers, pumps, valves, piping, and filters.
  • Record readings and make necessary adjustments to ensure proper equipment operation while analyzing system performance to determine causes of problems and take corrective action. Oversee contractor activities within the building and maintain records of building rounds, engineering logs, and data sheets.
  • Ensure compliance with emergency escalation procedures, Critical System Standards, and Working in Critical Areas Standards. Attend Local 399 school as part of the comprehensive training program.

Required Qualifications:

  • Education & Certification: High school diploma or equivalent required. Must be registered at the hall for IUOE Local 399 with willingness to attend Local 399 school for the full three-year training period.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to learn and apply technical knowledge in practical situations with basic understanding of building maintenance systems. Strong interest in mechanical and electrical systems combined with experience working with tools and mechanical equipment. Good problem-solving and analytical skills essential.
  • Professional Attributes: Excellent communication and teamwork abilities with commitment to workplace policies and safety protocols. Four-month probationary period applies at start of employment.
  • Physical Requirements: Physical ability to perform required tasks including lifting and working in various positions throughout building systems and equipment areas.
  • Transportation: Valid U.S. driver's license with clean driving record required for site visits and equipment service calls.
  • This apprentice position offers comprehensive training through Local 399's established three-year program, providing hands-on experience in building engineering while developing expertise in mechanical and electrical systems maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous construction, maintenance, or technical trade experience
  • Completion of relevant technical courses or vocational training programs

Salary/Comp:Hourly position starting at $18.25, with progressive wage increases based on apprenticeship year (2nd year: $19.00, 3rd year: $19.75, 4th year: $21.00).See CBA for IUOE Local 399.

Location:Onsite

Work Shift:

Full-time hours with overtime eligibility. The shift will be 1st, 2nd and/or 3rd shift as determined by the supervisor.

Estimated compensation for this position:

37,960.00 - 37,960.00 USD per year

This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
