Division of Animal Sciences

Job Description

This position will contribute to research and teaching activities in the Division of Animal Sciences. The Scientist lead will provide support in executing advance genetic production and manipulation of in vitro embryos. These embryo production activities are supported by NIH, USDA, and private foundation grants. This position will help meet the needs of current and future funded grants that are being submitted by MU to enhance the value of genetically modified animals and their value to agriculture and biomedical applications. This position is also intended to support our undergraduate research training by contributing to our hands-on labs and provide oversight to undergraduate research in the Division.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 30% Direct and provide oversight for the in vitro embryo production processes for the reproduction center/mini-core within Animal Sciences (the mini-core is a centralized, shared resource group within Animal Sciences that provides specialized genetic engineering modification services to users both within and out of the university.
  • 15% Coordinate embryo transfer procedures and oversee all quality control for the embryo cultures and transfers by assessing embryo quality and transfer processes for optimal transfer success
  • 10% Lead communication with users of the reproduction center within Animal Sciences
  • 15% Contribute to undergraduate training and/or teaching in Animal Science
  • 15% Perform surgical procedures in livestock models and assist animal care
  • 15% Train new staff on the embryo culture production and transfer techniques, and perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A Master's degree in related/ relevant area and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Additional degree and licensures as required by state/federal laws.

Preferred Qualifications

The complexity of the job is high as described in the key responsibilities. This role must have a basic knowledge of modifications of cells/embryos and the laboratory work associated with these processes. They need a level of surgical experience and understanding of compliance safety including the control of health risks, some of which are biohazard risks. The complexity is due not only to the nature of the work but also the rarity of the skills as the University of Missouri is one of the few institutions in North America this skill set is leveraged.

Requires high level of dexterity and understanding of embryo culture, genetics, and molecular biology.

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $69,097.60- $134,950.40 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
