This role may be filled at the Sr. Engineer or Engineer III level based on experience and qualifications.

This role will primarily support residential/non-residential energy efficiency and demand response programs. Strong preference will be given to those with previous energy efficiency experience. This role can sit anywhere in the Midwest service regions (IN, OH, KY).

Position Summary

The Energy Efficiency Engineer is at the crossroads of our energy efficiency programs, customers, and trade allies. The ideal candidate will be passionate about working with customers and stakeholders to develop strategic recommendations around energy efficiency projects and technologies. This role helps ensure technical accuracy across a range of HVAC, lighting, and process optimization projects and requires an understanding of building systems, energy modeling, and cost-effective efficiency solutions.

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise for customers and program teams for the implementation of energy efficiency measures and demand response initiatives.
  • Effectively coordinates with internal and external stakeholders. Maintains positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities across the Midwest region.
  • Reviews project files from various non-residential energy efficiency programs for accuracy and completeness.
  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills and maintains accurate records and files.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
  • Identifies threats and opportunities for customer preferences and program design in the service region. Works with internal stakeholders to effectively communicate and attack the threats and opportunities identified.
  • Assists in the planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities to ensure accomplishment of business goals and objectives.
  • Reviews and/or prepares thorough and accurate technical reports and correspondence to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reviews measure calculations for energy efficiency programs.
  • Train and mentor internal stakeholders on energy efficiency and demand response programs, measures, calculations, etc.
  • Stay up to date on industry's best practices, emerging technologies, technical manual modifications, and regulatory changes.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic/Required Qualifications

Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relative experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below.

Engineer III

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • In addition to bachelor's degree, four (4) years minimum of engineering experience
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE
  • In addition to bachelor's degree, six (6) years minimum of engineering experience OR five (5) years minimum of engineering experience with PE
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Desired Qualifications

  • Ability to perform ASHRAE Level 2 or investment grade energy audits.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret data related to the program/targeted customers which results in the implementation of program improvements.
  • Prior experience working for an energy utility or services company.
  • Experience in the Utility DSM industry and represent Duke Energy on technical boards and panels.
  • Knowledge of corporation's business objectives, strategies, products and services, pricing and markets.
  • Understanding of utility regulatory environment.
  • Ability to represent the company and develop relationships with audiences on community, regional or national boards /committees; in community events or with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)for use with media, public meetings, etc.
  • PE License, CEM and/or LC certification.

Working Conditions

  • Valid driver's license
  • Travel: 15-25%
  • Hybrid mobility classification - work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the posted reporting location.
