The Director of Infrastructure and Security at the University of Illinois College of Medicine is responsible for leading and managing the institution's IT infrastructure and security operations within College of Medicine Information Resources (COM IR). The Director will support the Associate Dean to ensure the reliability and security of IT systems, and support the College's mission of excellence in education, research, and patient care. Key responsibilities include managing daily operations and collaborating with UIC Technology Solutions and UI System IT infrastructure and cybersecurity teams. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Cyber Security Planning
  • Data Platforms (Cloud and On-Premise) and Data Centers
  • Networking and Unified Communication
  • Technical Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery and Data Protection
  • Infrastructure Applications

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • The Director collaborates with stakeholders to coordinate infrastructure and security activities, and ensures modern infrastructure capabilities align with organizational goals and quality standards while fostering a service-oriented culture that delivers value. Expertise in infrastructure, security, and operations is crucial for leading growth in these areas across the college of medicine. The Director promotes continuous improvement in information security practices, including regulatory awareness, privacy, and security.
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of the College's IT infrastructure, including data centers, cloud services, networking, and unified communications.
  • Oversee the development and execution of a comprehensive strategy for IT infrastructure and security that aligns with the College's goals.
  • Plan, assign, and review staff work to ensure that group objectives are met. Hire, train, develop, and manage administrative staff to ensure that the team can meet department objectives.
  • Develop, test, implement, and maintain security policies, procedures, and technologies in alignment with the Security Strategy and COM Information Resources goals to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, test, update, and maintain disaster recovery and business continuity plans to ensure the resilience of IT services.
  • Participate in strategic, budget/fiscal, and technology planning for the department, suggesting day-to-day and long-term enhancements to service delivery to clients.
  • Participate in CISPO and IT Leadership committees to establish metrics and reporting framework to measure the efficiency, effectiveness, and maturity level of the program.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison to vendors of third-party systems within the infrastructure domain: track vendor roadmaps, advocate for institutional needs, and escalate technical issues.
  • Collaborate with faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and IT teams (including Product Managers and Project Managers) to identify infrastructure and security needs, anticipate testing and change requirements, and implement solutions.
  • Ensure high availability, scalability, and performance of IT systems.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards. Engage with IT governance frameworks to support effective decision-making and risk management.
  • Ensure the availability of effective professional development and training opportunities associated with core services to enable client success.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications Required:
  1. Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or closely related field of study.
  2. Minimum of 10 years of professional IT experience which includes 5 years' experience in a management or director capacity
  3. Demonstrated experience within IS Security which includes experience in assessing, monitoring and maintaining, and evaluating information security policies and systems, including hardware, firmware and software.
  4. Cybersecurity certification such as CISSP, CISA, CISM, or equivalent.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of information security technical and management experience in large enterprises.
  • Strong understanding of the business impact of security tools, technologies, and policies.
  • Ability to develop and articulate a compelling business case for recommended actions.
  • Knowledge of security issues, techniques and implications across UNIX, LINUX, and Windows environments;
  • Experience with Active Directory, Cloud Security, Risk Management
