Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.

The Human Resources department is seeking a full-time Leave of Absence & Benefits Specialist to focus on the coordination and processes of the leave of absence programs and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, including Family and Medical Leave ( FMLA), Paid Family Leave ( PFL), Workers Compensation, Disability and Military, etc. The Leave of Absence & Benefits Specialist is the primary point of contact for employee leave of absence program inquiries and will also assist with benefits administration processes.


Success in this role involves demonstrating excellent customer service, interpersonal, written and verbal communication and organizational/time management skills.


Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare, complete, and maintain required correspondence and forms as needed for leave of absence administration.
  • Process and maintain accurate records and reports of all leave activity.
  • Counsel employees on leave of absence processes.
  • Assists with managing ADA accommodations and processes.
  • Assists with benefits inquiries from employees and administration of the health and welfare plans and wellness programs.
  • Liaison with the payroll department, leave of absence vendors, including union disability departments.
  • Preparation and processing of NYS Paid Family Leave compliance filings.



The expected salary range for the Leave of Absence and Benefits Specialist is $60,000/annual - $70,000/annual. This position is overtime-eligible and the AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years experience in benefits administration.
  • In-depth knowledge of leave of absence programs and the federal and state laws that govern them (e.g., HIPPA, FMLA, PFL).
  • Proven knowledge of benefits and HRIS systems.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite


Preferred Qualifications

  • Benefits-related certifications (e.g. CEBS, SHRM).


Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
