Job Purpose

The Project Manager in the Site Investigation and Remediation (SIR) team oversees the planning, execution, and completion of environmental cleanup projects at contaminated sites, ensuring compliance with all regulatory standards while managing budgets, project cost forecasts, timelines, and stakeholder relationships, all within the framework of National Grid's safety and quality procedures.

Key Accountabilities

Project Planning and Management:

  • Manage contractors hired by National Grid to implement site assessments to assess the nature and extent of contamination, development of feasibility studies and remediation plans, and routine regulatory reporting.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed project budgets, cost forecasts, timelines, work plans, and relevant cost support documentation.
  • Ensure all remediation plans and activities are conducted in compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations (e.g., CERCLA, RCRA, Clean Water Act).
  • Oversee the implementation of remediation activities such as soil excavation, groundwater extraction, vapor mitigation, on-site treatment processes, and dredging.
  • Maintain open communication with clients, regulators, community stakeholders, legal teams, and internal teams regarding project progress, challenges, and mitigation strategies.
  • Serve as primary liaison with external contractors assigned on-site work and cost estimation support.
  • Where multi-party cleanup site includes additional stakeholders, serve as a liaison between the project lead(s) and National Grid, and keeps the Environmental Accounting Team Liaison informed of the timing and amount of cash calls.
  • Keep the legal team apprised of any discussions that may expand the pool of potentially responsible parties or adjustments to cost allocation matters.
  • Present estimates and support documents to management and stakeholders, clearly communicating the rationale behind all cost assumptions.

Risk Management and Safety:

  • Ensure consultants and contractors are implementing comprehensive safety protocols to protect workers and the environment during remediation activities.
  • Identify and coordinate with consultants and or contractors to mitigate potential environmental risks associated with remediation projects.

Cost Estimation:

  • Track project expenditures against the budget, identify cost variance, and implement corrective actions or cost-saving measures.
  • Manage invoices and payments to subcontractors and vendors.
  • Prepare and submit regular project reports to regulatory agencies and internal management.
  • Conduct quarterly reviews and assessing cost estimate adjustments.
  • Collect and maintain supporting documentation for cost estimates Coordinate/Manage the distribution of all documents, including addenda and RFI responses, to subcontractors, vendors and the project team.
  • Serves as the primary reviewer of project cost estimates and all required updates, including supporting documentation.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in estimating environmental remediation or construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of environmental regulations, remediation techniques, and remedial construction practices.
  • Experience leading and managing remedial projects of medium complexity.
  • Experience with sites with 3rd party ownership.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations and environmental remediation standards.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)/program Management Professional (PgMP) certification is preferred.
  • Knowledge of technical, safety and financial aspects of SIR projects.
  • Ability to understand and address legal and public engagement aspects of remedial projects. Excel in collaborating with internal team members to foster a positive and productive team environment.
  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid's Safe Driver policy (e.g., must not have more than one traffic violation in the last year and/or more than one motor vehicle accident within the past three years.) required.
