Job Description

The Lead Respiratory Therapist position leads and facilitates cross functional core teams within the Respiratory Care Services Department, coordinating and implementing assignments for daily operations of complex, enterprise-wide inpatient and outpatient care. The Lead Interacts with / mentors the Respiratory Therapists in different settings throughout the organization. The Lead participates in, coaches and advises on efforts that will serve to improve efficiency, quality, and the patient experience in Respiratory Therapy and Pulmonary Diagnostics. The Lead chairs and/or assists patient experience and/or performance improvement teams in collaboration with clinical staff with oversite from the Respiratory Care Management Team.

The Lead serves as the respiratory therapy clinical expert for the Respiratory Services department throughout the enterprise. They are resources for respiratory staff and other clinical leaders/staff. This role will actively participate in patient care when needed. The Lead assists with onboarding new staff and facilitates training for the advancement on the department clinical ladder or into specialty areas within the department. The Lead manages performance improvement initiatives through the application of clinical expertise, knowledge of both clinical and administrative settings and frequent interactions with a variety of clinical roles. Leads in Respiratory Care serve as the Chairperson on various committees. The Lead will utilize their expertise in enhancing the respiratory care services department, staying aware of evidence-based practice in the field of respiratory therapy, and will provide education to the staff. The lead will collaborate internally and externally with clinical leaders and demonstrate change leadership. The Lead participates in research as needed, evaluates programs' activities and outcomes, manages policies and protocols, and reviews current best practice through networking and ongoing education.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee daily operations of shift; assist with staffing shift; maintain assignment forms
  • Oversee monthly department schedule; ensuring proper skill mix per shift
  • Engage in direct patient care as needed, assisting with procedures and interventions to support the Respiratory Care Staff.
  • Provide support and mentoring to staff.
  • Serves as a liaison between the patient and family, primary care physician, internal and external care providers, specialists, referrers, collaborate with network members, e.g, social workers and nutritionists, vendors, and the wider health care community. Leads, facilitates manages and collaborates with the multi-disciplinary team members across the enterprise to facilitate and integrate evidence-based practices into the Respiratory Care Services Department.
  • Maintains contemporary knowledge of the in the care and management of patients with respiratory disorders both inpatient and outpatient; maintains current clinical practice /other guidelines and regulatory specifications to include Joint Commission, CAP, and other regulatory bodies. (Examples: reads and accesses resources, shares new developments, attends workshops and conferences.)
  • Provides feedback to the staff and collaborates with Respiratory Department management to develop strategies to overcome organizational barriers regarding knowledge, process / workflows, and interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and utilizes communication/ influencing expertise to foster collaboration among staff for the adoption of best practices.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree required, Bachelor degree preferred.
  • Five years clinical experience as an RRT or RPFT.
  • The Lead of Interventional Pulmonary Medicine must have a minimum three years of clinical experience in advanced procedures and worked as a clinical first assistant during their clinical practice.
  • The Lead of Pulmonary Diagnostic Lab, must have three years clinical experience in advanced pulmonary diagnostic studies and be RPFT within (3) months of hire in not already RPFT.

License/Certification/Registration Requirements

  • Certified by the State of California Respiratory Care Board as a Respiratory Care Practitioner
  • Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (RRT) or Registered by the National Board for Respiratory Care as a Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT)
  • Certified BCLS and ACLS, and NRP (NRP for all except Interventional Pulmonary and Pulmonary Diagnostics Lab leads)
  • PALS certification preferred (must achieve PALS certification within one year of hiring for this position)

Salary Range:

$72.47 - $96.32 USD Hourly
