The Billing Specialist will be responsible for the accurate preparation, submission, and follow-up of claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance payers. This position ensures all claims are processed in accordance with payer rules and regulatory requirements, while maintaining efficient and compliant billing operations to support timely reimbursement. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and comfortable working with large volumes of data.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Billing Responsibilities

1. Generate, review, and submit electronic and paper claims to Medicare, Medicaid, and third-party payers.

2. Review documentation for completeness and compliance with payer requirements.

3. Identify and correct claim errors prior to submission to minimize denials and rejections.

4. Monitor claim status and perform timely follow-up to ensure prompt payment.

5. Research and resolve claim denials, underpayments, and discrepancies.

6. Prepare and process claim adjustments, resubmissions, and appeals as needed.

7. Assist Accounts Receivable staff with posting and reconciling payments and adjustments.

8. Communicate with internal departments (clinical, intake, and administrative teams) to resolve billing-related issues.

9. Maintain current knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and insurance billing regulations and reimbursement policies.

General AR Support

  • Assist with AR aging reviews and customer follow-up as needed.
  • Maintain organized records for billing and cash application processes.
  • Support internal and external audit requests.
  • Participate in process improvements, SOP updates, and system enhancements.
  • Back up others in the department as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient in Medicare, Medicaid, and clearinghouse platforms.
  • Knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10 coding standards.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Strong Excel skills (sorting/filtering, VLOOKUP, pivot tables preferred).
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational ability.
  • Strong communication skills and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to report to work as scheduled.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or billing certification preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in medical billing, with demonstrated knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurance claim processes.
  • Experience in a healthcare or home health environment is strongly preferred.
