| Description of Work |
Responsible for the daily operation of the department and the department programs. The Department Chair/ Director will promote excellence in department programs within the University. Chair/ Director responsibilities are classified as professional duties requiring leadership and mentoring of faculty, administrative expertise to include vision, long term and short-term planning, decision-making and coordination of instruction. |
| Essential Duties and Responsibilities |
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications from and nominations of tenured faculty members for the position of Chair of the Department of Philosophy. This twelve-month, senior-level appointment begins July 1, 2026. Salary is competitive. The Department of Philosophy offers a major and minor, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics, and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy with an optional Concentration in Research and Data Ethics. The department has connections to other units across the university, both at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and is closely affiliated with
UNC Charlotte's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics (hhtps://ethics.charlotte.edu/). Successful candidates will demonstrate capability in fulfilling the responsibilities of the Chair as outlined in the Department of Philosophy bylaws. |

| Preferred Education, Skills and Experience |
Required Qualifications: Tenured rank at
UNC Charlotte; a
PHD in Philosophy or related field from an accredited institution; an exemplary record of publication, teaching, and service in the field of philosophy, appropriate to rank; and capability of strong leadership in undergraduate/graduate education and in research, including the ability to facilitate faculty efforts at seeking external grant support. The candidate should also demonstrate a commitment to the engagement and success of the Department's students, staff, and faculty.
Desired Qualifications: Previous administrative experience; the ability to work with interdisciplinary programs and centers; potential as a strong advocate for the department at the College and University levels; experience mentoring faculty and graduate students; and a commitment to advancing the University's outreach mission. |
