The full salary range for this position is $88,000/year to $161,000/year.

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Director of the MultiCultural Center (MCC) oversees all MCC operations, working to create a welcoming campus environment for a diverse student population that includes underrepresented minority students, students of color, international students, and students from marginalized communities. Collaborating with students and faculty, the MCC provides education and programming events (more than 100 events, 40,000 users annually) to the campus and broader community about issues of race, class, sexual orientation, diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. The Director takes a leadership role in initiating and bringing together members of Student Affairs and faculty from academic departments and collaborates on topical issues with academic departments such as the Department of Black Studies, the Center for Black Studies Research, the Department of Education, Religious Studies, and other academic departments. The Director leads strategic planning efforts for the Division on the topic of diversity. Working with the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA), Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, Dean of Students, and VCSA Chief of Staff, the Director coordinates a division-wide effort for on-going training and development of staff in cross-cultural competence. The Director also serves as an expert advisor, resource, and advocate to campus and divisional leadership in addressing campus climate issues related to race, class, sexual orientation and diversity issues. Working collaboratively with campus and community partners, the director provides leadership in identifying areas of concern and need and establishes vision, programs, and policies that address those concerns and needs including race related, diversity and religion related events that are characterized as complex, and high impact/high risk, critical, and time-sensitive. The Director works with the VCSA and Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life, and Dean of Students to design and lead SA programming for the campus related to social justice topics. As Director of MCC, oversees all logistics involved in high level event planning including technical support. The Center also provides staff support and guidance to more than 50 affiliated student groups that present an additional 200 to 300 annual events (forums, panels, workshops, etc.) using MCC facilities and resources. The Director is the fiscal officer for the department and is responsible for supervising the development, marketing, and delivery of educational programs, direct services, and advocacy activities on behalf of students, faculty, staff, and community members. The Director oversees the daily administrative, budgetary, and human resource functions of the department, which includes a 4500-square-foot facility (150-seat theater, lounge/art gallery, community-use kitchen, and meeting rooms).

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • A minimum of 5 to 8 years of experience, preferably in cultural centers or higher education institutes, creating programs and fostering student leadership around anti-racism and intersectional justice.
  • Experience working with students to facilitate their ideas and leadership as well as ability to advocate for students in spaces where there is a lack of student representation.
  • Visionary thinking and academic knowledge to support the development of cutting-edge programs that advance knowledge on social justice.
  • Demonstrates a deep understanding of structural and systemic oppression.
  • Demonstrated history of strong leadership abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, and collaborative relationship building
  • Political acumen and demonstrated experience relying on creative problem-solving, flexibility, and conflict resolution skills in a space that is politically charged
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise a diverse professional and student staff
  • Demonstrated abilities to manage a budget and conceptualize ways to raise funds to maintain a critical social justice space
  • Demonstrated understanding of, commitment to, and skill in fostering an equitable and inclusive campus community for all students, staff, and faculty.
  • Knowledge of and experience with balancing the roles of advocate for students and campus administrator.
  • Understand UCSB's commitment to inclusion and work to advance our goals of access, equity, and inclusion for all students, staff, and faculty in all aspects of campus life.

35% Management of Campus Climate/Diversity Initiatives:

Management and coordination of Student Affairs Initiatives related to Campus Climate/Diversity Issues. Collaborates across campus with faculty to develop dynamic lines of communication with the division of Student Affairs, furthers existing initiatives, and develops new initiatives; works with directors in Student Affairs to develop new initiatives in their areas; assists the VCSA, AVC/DOS, and others in communicating to faculty about Student Affairs in ways that are effective, and bring more faculty expertise into division projects Assists in developing and leading diversity and social justice programs for the Division of Student Affairs. This program carries out key goals of the Division and supports campus climate efforts for the SA Division and the campus. Determines objectives based on racial climate, directs complex program, develops strategies and policies and functions with a high degree of autonomy. Determines strategies for a program with organizational-wide impact. Provides leadership in the development and implementation of strategic, long-term plans for MCC that are aligned with the Division of Student Affairs.

Participates in the development of the Division's strategic planning. Leads the development of goals and implements projects related to faculty collaboration and cultural competency as part of the formulation of the Division's strategic plans. Practices culturally sensitive outreach and high level interpersonal skills to maintain sound and productive working relationships with diverse communities, Expert judgment, decision-making and problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills. Has a leadership role in working with faculty and Student Affairs department directors in the Division of Student Affairs to develop partnerships between faculty and the division.

35% Multi-Cultural Center Management - Event Planning, Performing Arts Production and Management of the MCC:

Manages a comprehensive performing arts program with critical impact on the Institution. This includes directing all aspects of planning, developing, implementing music, dance, spoken word, film and video screening, artist presentation and poetry reading programs. Manages complex events and conducts comprehensive planning for programs that have high visibility, high liability/risk (race relations) and high organizational and community impact. Due to extremely sensitive nature of such events, expert level public relations, tact, sensitivity, discretion and political acumen skills are critical. Typical dialogues and discussions include issues such as racial injustice, Islamophobia, racial intolerance, homo/transphobia, protests and national and global movements and current events. In partnership with the MCC advisory board, develops, implements, and administers operational policies and determines exceptions to policies (including making exceptions related to controversial presentations).

Chairs quarterly meetings of the MultiCultural advisory board (comprising faculty, staff, and students); recruits and trains new board members as appropriate. Oversees an MCC student council including student representatives from diverse student groups; oversees the development and coordination of conferences workshops, and cultural and educational activities for these diverse communities. Oversees with broad program responsibility the operations of the MCC: hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating staff and administering center and university policies and procedures. Manages the budget and resource allocations for the MCC including monitoring all sources of income (state, student lock-in fees, income, grant and donor funding).

Represents MCC and SA with academic departments and other departments at UCSB as well as external organizations in the wider Santa Barbara/Goleta communities. Represents the institution at a state-wide level. Works closely with academic department chairs and other faculty to support and complement academic courses with special lectures and programs including courses that give credit for participation in events or programs. Works collaboratively with Student Affairs leadership, campus colleagues, and faculty to advance the vision, mission, values, and priorities of the Division of Student Affairs (sa.ucsb.edu/about/). Completes required training, fulfill applicable reporting requirements, and maintains relevant certifications as required by Human Resources and/or their supervisor.

20% Campus Diversity/Cultural Competence:

Collaborates with department chairs, faculty, graduate students, administrators, and other campus and community members (e.g., IV Arts Collective, Interdisciplinary Humanities Center) to conceptualize and develop special initiatives and high level discussions that enhance a campus climate conducive to diversity, collaborates on creating policies, programs, and initiatives that validate, celebrate, and honor marginalized communities at UCSB, promoting inclusion and creating a welcoming environment Works closely with the Office of Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and the Office of Equal Opportunity and Discrimination Prevention Office. Conceptualizes, plans and implements high profile diversity lecture series at UCSB. Provides leadership and coordinates campus response to important events and/or crisis situations that arise in the local community, state, nation, or internationally, leading discussions and creating town halls and other forums; offers advice to campus and divisional leadership on appropriate response. Along with the Associate Director, serves as community liaison. Participates in the recruitment and retention of faculty of color. Participates in the UC system-wide diversity forum and the California Cultural Center directors' forum. Serves as liaison to other cultural centers at California institutions.

5% Development, Fund-Raising, and Grant Writing:

Collaborates closely with the Student Affairs Grants & Development team in identifying, seeking, and stewarding new and existing gifts and grants for the Department and Division. Actively works to identify and cultivate potential donors. Oversees efforts to seek grant funding from a variety of sources to enhance MCC programming and facilities.

5% Research, Assessment, and Evaluation:

Develops mechanisms for identifying changing interests and needs of people of color; remains informed of the latest national and international research on relevant issues. Uses needs-assessment research and data as the basis for strategic planning, goal setting, and program evaluation. Formulates outcomes-based evaluation methods to determine effectiveness of programming and services in meeting departmental and campus missions and goals. Oversees the production of a comprehensive annual report that is distributed to the chancellor, the MCC board, administrators, faculty, and other campus and community members. Conducts at least annual assessment of department operations and/or programming utilizing the criteria outlined in the Division's Strategic Planning Framework (sa.ucsb.edu/about/). Oversees the preparation of the Department's submission to the Student Affairs Annual Report.
