Job Description
General Purpose of Job: Develops and implements occupational therapy treatment plans for assigned patients; evaluates and modifies patient care treatments as appropriate. Essential Duties:
- Consistently exemplifies "on-stage" behavior.
- Is responsible for creating a destination, experience-based service, delivers customized experiences using patient's profiles.
- Completes initial occupational therapy evaluations and develops a treatment plan of care for assigned patients; coordinates acquisition of needed adaptive devices, durable medical equipment and orthoses.
- Designs, implements and modifies therapeutic interventions that may include, but are not limited to, therapeutic exercise, functional training, manual therapy (including soft tissue and joint mobilization): custom splint or brace construction, physical agents or modalities; and patient-related instruction (including home exercise program).
- Provides occupational therapy treatment to restore or maintain patient's ADL skills.
- Documents patient treatments, initial evaluation, progress notes and discharge summaries in a timely manner and in accordance with Hospital policies and insurance requirements.
- Performs occupational therapy re-evaluations to assess patient progress; recommends changes to the treatment plan of care as appropriate.
- Communicates regularly with physicians, interdisciplinary team members, patient families, insurance companies and others regarding patient's treatment and progress.
- Provides guidance to assigned staff. Oversees COTA and offers supervisory assistance.
- Duties include, but are not limited to, assigning and reviewing work, training, co-signing documentation, counseling, evaluating staff performance, and participating in hiring and termination decisions.
- Instructs and teaches patients in safe transfers, activities of daily living, correct ambulation, therapeutic exercises and correct usage of exercise equipment; trains family members and caregivers on various therapeutic procedures and home exercises.
- Schedules patient treatments/appointments along with referring patients to other hospital services.
- Assists in maintaining therapy equipment and treatment areas; orders supplies as necessary.
- Responsible for ongoing development of clinical skills through continuing education programs, professional contacts, journal articles, and participation in professional organization.
- Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. 16. Adheres to the organization's policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
- Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned
Job Requirements

Certified Hand Therapist Valid State of Michigan Occupational Therapist Certification/Registration and licensure CPR/BCLS certification |
| Work Experience |
Five or more years of related occupational therapy, and Certified Hand Therapist experience |
| Education |
Bachelor's degree in Occupational Therapy |
| Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
Knowledge of occupational therapy theory and techniques * Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of rehabilitation services including HIPAA confidentiality and TJC mandates * Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation * Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate, orally and in written form, with patients, families, physicians, health care professionals, and insurance companies in the exchange of information. Presents self in a warm, professional and caring manner. * Skills necessary to provide guidance, training, prioritize and review the work of assigned staff * Demonstrates professional appearance. * Analytical ability to develop treatment plans based on occupational therapy theory and incorporation of patient and physician goals * Mental ability to complete required documentation in a timely manner, deal with the concerns of patients and their families, and handle frequent scheduling changes * Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, transfer/lift/ reposition patients, assist patients with exercises, and properly operate rehabilitation equipment/devices, and access patient homes which may not be barrier free * Knowledge in custom splint and brace construction |
