Scientist, Cell Culture

At GSK, we have bold ambitions for patients, aiming to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people by the end of the decade. R&D is committed to discovering and delivering transformational vaccines and medicines to prevent and change the course of disease.

We believe the Greater Boston area is an important hub for the biotech and pharma industry, which is why we've invested in growing our footprint and expanding our R&D space in Cambridge, with a primary focus on additional state-of-the-art lab space.

We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated scientist to join the Protein Biochemistry research team. In this role you will apply deep expertise in mammalian cell culture and DNA production/purification to support preclinical vaccine candidates. You will work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams, introduce and refine laboratory methods, and contribute directly to multiple pipeline projects that impact candidates' progression.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Propose, implement and maintain cell culture capabilities for recombinant protein production in suspension culture.
  • Produce high-quality plasmid DNA and other nucleic acid reagents to support transfection and expression workflows; ensure appropriate QC (yield, purity, endotoxin where required).
  • Collaborate with purification, molecular design, biophysics and structural biology teams to prioritise samples and deliver materials on schedule.
  • Deliver reproducible, well-controlled experiments with clear documentation and data reporting.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and manage cell culture consumables and inventories.
  • Interpret experimental results, update SOPs/protocols and introduce optimizations to improve yield, quality or throughput.
  • Ensure laboratory safety and compliance with relevant regulations and SOPs.
  • Present results in internal project meetings and prepare summaries for external scientific meetings when appropriate.
  • Keep current with field developments and proactively introduce relevant new methods.

Basic Qualifications:

  • BSc and 6+ years of experience or. MSc with four years of experience in protein biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology or a related discipline.
  • 2+ years of experience in suspension mammalian cell culture for recombinant protein production, preferably in an industrial research environment, national lab, or core facility.
  • 2+ years of experience with HEK293 and CHO cell lines (transfection, expansion, cryopreservation, sterility/mycoplasma awareness).
  • 2+ years of experience producing and purifying high-quality plasmid DNA.
  • 2+ years of experience in using and maintaining cell culture equipment and handling consumables.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience with other expression systems (bacterial, insect, yeast).
  • Familiarity with downstream sample characterization (e.g., biolayer interferometry, endotoxin testing).
  • Experience with buffer exchange, tangential flow filtration (TFF), or related process techniques.
  • Experience coordinating or mentoring junior scientists.
  • Comfortable working across changing priorities and timelines.
  • Fluent in English.
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and collaborate across teams.
