A.I.S., Inc. (AIS) is a national scientific services firm supporting maritime activities requiring certification of compliance with environmental regulations as well as collecting data for use by Federal, State, Municipal, and other government agencies along the US coastline. AIS is looking for a Fisheries Biologist to support an ongoing acoustic trawl survey.

Primary Function:

AIS is looking for a fisheries biologist to support an ongoing acoustic trawl survey within the Fishery Resource Analysis & Monitoring Division of NOAA. This position requires an outgoing individual capable of leading wet-lab operation throughout all stages of survey operation.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Survey Preparation and Participation:



  • Complete training to access NWFSC server and prepare for at-sea research deployment.
  • Familiarize with the software and methods for troubleshooting peripheral devices under the guidance of FEAT Newport staff.
  • Set up the wet lab and assist with deploying equipment on research vessels.
  • Deploy on research vessels for extended periods, sometimes working shifts of up to 12 hours for approximately 35-70 days per year.
  • Collect and analyze samples, documenting all efforts through detailed at-sea notes and progress reports.
  • Update and maintain databases, ensuring accurate data tracking.
  • Organize, inventory, and maintain necessary supplies pre-survey and during deployment.
  • Complete post-survey tasks, including analyzing stomach contents, preserving samples, and inventorying gear.
  • Safely operate and drive vehicles, including trucks, and ensure proper handling while backing up and maneuvering in various field settings.



Compensation: Candidates will be paid an hourly rate to be negotiated, and total compensation will vary depending on candidates' depth of experience. This is a full-time position. AIS benefits package includes health and dental insurance, vacation, sick and holiday benefits.

Minimum Qualifications:



  • A solid foundation in the scientific method and basic statistical analysis, with 20+ undergraduate-level credits in science-based courses.
  • At least 90 days of at-sea field experience.
  • Proficiency in using dichotomous keys to identify fish and invertebrates.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as troubleshooting software/hardware issues.
  • Basic soldering skills and the ability to prepare equipment for wet environments.
  • Completion of an at-sea safety course.
  • Must be able to work independently and take initiative in moving projects forward.
  • Must be able to handle unexpected situations by relying on training, protocols, and guides to work through challenges.
  • Must be able to manage tasks efficiently, establishing workflows and timelines.
  • Must be able to demonstrate strong organizational skills and a proactive approach to process improvement.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate and collaborate with team members to ensure project success.
  • Ability to pass a background check, including fingerprinting.
  • AMSEA Marine Safety Instructor Training



Preferred Qualifications:



  • Extensive at-sea field experience with a focus on determining catch composition and biological sample collection.
  • A completed background check through NOAA or another federal agency within the past four years.
  • In-depth knowledge of Northeast Pacific fishes and experience collecting and analyzing stomach contents.
  • Experience operating a small boat trailer.
  • Familiarity with electronics, including repair and maintenance of systems in wet environments.
  • Experience in managing a variety of roles, including but not limited to laboratory, field, and paperwork, while to new tasks and responsibilities.
  • Strong independence and a self-starting attitude-able to take on tasks and run with them.
  • Experience assisting with project management, including establishing workflows, processes, and timelines, with a focus on continuous improvement and efficiency.
  • Ability to handle unexpected challenges in the field, using training, manuals, and guides to adapt and solve problems.
  • A clear, confident voice for communication, ensuring tasks are completed as needed.



Travel:



  • Travel Reimbursed at an hourly rate along with compensation for miles accrued on a personal vehicle as well as per diem at the specified Government rate.
