Human Landing System (HLS) IVA Suit Systems Engineer - NASA Johnson Space Center Location: NASA Johnson Space Center Status: Full Time Clearance: Background check U.S. Citizenship required Astrion is seeking a Human Landing System (HLS) IVA Suit Systems Engineer to join our team in support of NASA's pursuit of deep space exploration. In this role, you will support the development of flight hardware for the HLS IVA Suit Project within JSC's Crew Survival Engineering. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS: This position has been posted at multiple levels. - Typically requires a bachelor's degree in engineering and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area
- Experience with the development of requirements documents including functional requirements and verification success criteria
- Experience with the design, assembly, verification, testing, and operation of Space system hardware. Prior experience in pressure, oxygen systems, suit systems would be considered a bonus
- Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the space hardware field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, material selection, and design software and tools
- Ability to prepare written documents and to verbally present at various meetings
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office products
- Familiar with Johnson Space Center (JSC) organizations, processes, and procedures
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS:
- BS degree in engineering from an accredited engineering school and a minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years of direct engineering experience, or a MS degree from an accredited engineering school and four (4) years of direct engineering experience, or Ph.D. degree and zero (0) years direct engineering experience.
- Experience with NASA flight processes including Class I/II/III hardware
- Experienced knowledge of systems engineering topics, including verification and validation
- Previous experience in designing and building unique hardware
- Previous testing experience
- Familiarity with machine shop techniques and processing hardware through the manufacturing process.
- Ability to perform hands-on test buildup, data processing, and documentation including test plans and reports
- Ability to work independently
- Exposure to human factors engineering.
- Exposure to safety processes and risk management techniques.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support the project in designing, developing, testing and certifying spacesuit-related hardware for spaceflight application.
- Creating verification products relevant to hardware to show requirement compliance and mission.
- Be an active participant in preparing and presenting content for design reviews with the HLS program.
- Lead/support any related team meetings or program meetings.
- Review the data products submitted by each Commercial Provider and assess the architecture, designs, and performance against requirements.
- Working with other project team members to ensure project requirements are achieved.
- Keep relevant program stakeholders abreast of project development and operational status.
- Shall provide statuses, schedule, and forward work information to ensure all necessary project objectives and milestones are being accomplished on time and within program/project resources.
- Support IVA Suit Project Manager in integration and discussions with external orgs including Flight Operations Directorate (FOD), Crew Office (CB), Engineering Directorate (EA) and Crew Training representatives.
- Support IVA Suit Project Manager in the managing of the project's Technical, Schedule, Cost and Risk as needed.
- Maintain a responsive and productive working relationship with HLS program personnel and any vendor or subcontractors.
- Systems Engineer will support PM who leads and provide weekly statuses to the HLS program, working actions given by program (as needed) and presenting at program forums for items such as hardware certification, project status, and/or risks.
- Traveling to support project meetings, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), development efforts, qualification (certification) testing, failure investigations or technical issues, crew training activities and other critical project tasks are all responsibilities for this position.
- Work in a team environment and report to project management to provide status on progress and issues related to support of the HLS IVA Suit project.
- Perform other duties as required.
